Brilliant thread- am just starting to read from the beginning. I really like Jeff Yeager's outlook- I am just rereading his first book.

He has a FB page and I have shown him how he's helped us all over here on the OS Forum;):D

  • Hello All, it's still Satuday evening for me. I just got back from shopping in the 'big city' with my Dad. I don't think I will need to go shopping for a while so I will Fiscal Fast for as long as I can this month.
As I said in an earlier post, I have been busy working on making Christmas gifts. I found some nice wrapping paper so I bought it. My Mom and Dad are completely out of wrapping paper. It says Merry Christmas on it and is silver in color.
Wow, it's not even 5:30 pm here and it is already dark. Ugh....I don't like it. Darkness equals loneliness for me.
I am almost done with two of my Christmas gifts, I may be able to finnish all of my gifts with time to spare!
Well I am off to 'elf'/ continue making my Christmas gifts.

  • I adore HM soups as they are so easy to make and are really great for lunches and freeze beautifully.I will have a go at the tomato one it sounds nice and filling :):)
My friend bought me a book a couple of years ago called the soup bible and there are some great recipes in there. This morning I am going to make some cauliflower soup as I have some already chopped in water in the fridge,as I am having trouble eating after my tooth extraction soup is a good way of using up stuff.I shall have cauliflower, some diced onion and celery and a couple of carrots and cook till soft then add some curry powder I think, and blend and see what it tastes like :):) I tend to like to experiment :) The leek and potato with the chilli was very scrummy I must admit:):)Tinned soup always seems so bland to me.At least I know whats in my soups :):)I watched Saturday Kitchen yesterday and there was a lovely looking one on there called laska made with prawns which looked gorgerous.
NSD for the rest of the week as my cupboards are stuffed full and I can't get anything else in them anyway :):)I typed up all the list of the store cupboards and fixed them on the insides of each cupboard so I can see at a glance what's in there .I probably have enough for a good fortnight at the very least .:):):) Happy Frugalling chums

Thought you might like to know that Jeff replied- he had no idea that we'd even heard of the fiscal fast over here- he thinks it's "fantastic".

  • Gosh, hello Jeff, Catznine pointed us in the direction of your books etc. last year and I for one have found the concept of fiscal fasting a really useful one. I will certainly have a look at your webshow! This whole site is full of useful info if you are on a budget or just don't like waste. The Old Style board we're on has a great 'make do and mend' ethos which I suspect would fit in with your approach. I have picked up many, many good tips from here.

Total spend for me today was £3.60 on a couple of coffees - could have done without, but I'm going to go for a week FF from tomorrow - cupboards should be full enough for a week, shouldn't need anything besides petrol.

Thanks Aril for contacting Jeff, hope you are going to join in with us!

Dinner tonight is some nut roast from the freezer, potatoes, cabbage and other veg - cooking extra so wecan have bubble and squeak tomorrow with good old baked beans.

Jackie, hope your sore mouth is better soon.

Kellylouise, will try your soup sometime, sounds a good storecupboard one.

Erica, days are very short here too, best to settle down with your books or crafting. I'm a stay at home on Winter evenings.

Was lovely and sunny here today, we saw a curlew, oystercatchers and redshanks when out walking on the coast.

Hope you all have a good evening. MM.
  • WOW!! Jeff, it's an honor to have you on here. I am an American in California. I just happened to look up fiscal fasting one day and found this thread. I have to say people on the 'other sid of the pond' are very nice and welcoming.
It was sunny but very cold here today. After my shop in the 'big city' I may have to fiscal fast for the rest of the month. But, that is ok. I'm more focused on making my gifts. I am almost done with two of my gifts, but have 3 more gifts to make.
I am hoping it will only take me a few weeks. It's nice because I am not stressed out about 'shopping' for Christmas gifts. I think this will be the first time I have been able to make ALL of my Christmas gifts. :)

  • Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

    Where to start?

I'm curious to know about the popularity of "crock-pots" (AKA "slow cookers") in the UK. Here in the U.S., ownership of multiple crock-pots tends to be a sure indicator that you may very well be a true "cheapskate." What about over there?
  • Another standby cupboard soup I make that is really simple, quick and cheap is pea and ham.

I use a tin of value mushy peas
0.5 ham stock cube (1 stock cube I find is too salty)
    Hot water

I put the peas in a saucepan and use a potato masher to make the peas more smooth as I like a chunky texture.

Crumble over 0.5 stock cube and add hot water over to the consistency of soup that you like.

Heat through and serve. I find this lasts me 2 days as the soup is quite filling.

Don't know about multiple pot ownership, as I can only speak for myself, I'v just got the 1 pot, but then again it is just me & OH and he's not a stew/soup fan, so it get's used about once a month.
