quote Rokkster: "re Eclipse - limited to 1Gb download - but additional Mbs are peanuts)"
It is £1.75 per Gig of extra download - which is not peanuts considering you can get unlimited for around £4 to £5 extra.

Eh? When you say "onetel phone lines" do you mean you either have onetel as a CPS provider or pay your line rental to them rather than BT? Either way, you still have a BT line, and can therefore get ADSL with any provider, unless Bulldog are bundling CPS to give a lower ADSL price (like TalkTalk do).

Bulldog sent me a leaflet round so I rang them up to get the tech details.
Also Martin Lewis has an article warning against going for another line rental provider (other than BT) as there is no law against them preventing you from using call18866 or any other cps or just dial up cheap provider like onetel etc.

Bulldog would have to replace the BT line rental with their line rental. They then upgrade the hardware in the exchange to make it 4M compatible.

Bulldog confirmed I would not be able to use Onetel with carrier pre select (cps) anymore if I went for line rental with them. Onetel save me a fortune for all sorts of reasons - so because of this my phone costs would go up with Bulldog, even with their 9 per month free anytime tariff. I would also not be able to use a predial number such as 18866. Now call18866 also do a freephone number - Bulldog confirmed that I could still get freephone numbers free with their line rental - so that might help.

The fact is BT are governmentally restricted, so they are not legally allowed to prevent you using cps or predial numbers - this is in order to encourage competition. Bulldog and Onetell and other line rental providers are not restricted by government as presumably they ARE the competition to BT - hence they stop you using these things.

    Hope this clears things up.

In the broadband article it says:
Many providers now base their charges on the volume of data used. This is measured in Megabytes, MB, or Gigabytes, GB (1,000 MB).
I was under the impression that it was bits they were talking about, not bytes. For example, a lot of people ask "if I have 1mb broadband, why does it take so long to download one megabyte of data", and I was told it was due to it only being a 1megabit service, not 1 megabyte, so only one eighth of the speed that people are expecting, as there are 8 bits in a byte...
Thanks to all who post constructively.

It may be of some use to broadband users of Wanadoo (Freeserve) who are on the 512k service and want a FREE upgrade to the 1meg service.
Wanadoo charge a £20 fee to upgrade. I told them that if they wanted me to stay with them instead of changing providers to Tiscalli they should either do the upgrade for free or give me a MAC code. (This is the Migration code needed to change providers). Guess what... I got the upgrade for free giving an equivalent price as Tiscalli for the next 10 months!!!! We will then see what offers are around then!!
