oap wrote:Hi again, that is wonderful information, thanks a lot, have a feeling where we live, off the coast of North Wales, we will not get it, there is always a catch, but maybe, as the competition hots up, we will all get a better deal
Remember though that cheapest isn't always best. UK Online's cheap deal is a datastream service (see earlier posts on this subject), so you can't change provider as easily, and will lose service for at least a week if you do change...

Thank you, yes, you are right, sometimes cheapest is not best, and there are catches, so will stick with dial up Claranet, which is always quite quick and service excellent,£9.99 amonth, until I read here that you have found something really worthwhile, on Broadband, that does not cost a fortune, many many thanks, oap0

I've just contacted Bt to get a MAC address for transferring my Broadband from BT Yahoo (£26.98 a month) and she offered me a reduction to £20.24 a month without any pushing.
Note it is for 4 months, when she said BT would have better prices anyway.
If you are with BT and don't really want to change but want to save, it's got to be worth a try.

You are connected to the Upton Park (LNUPK) telephone exchange.
Your exchange is enabled for ADSL!
There is currently no spare capacity for ADSL connections at your exchange
The following level of service is available at your location:
You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL
You are approximately 1.86km from the exchange (straight line distance).
So I suppose the above means that there's no point signing up with bulldog for 4mb broadband before 1st May 20050 -
@littlemisscheap
thats what my exchange said and i'm now on 2Mbit with freedom2surf0 -
I must admit, I have not read the whole thread, but interested to see that there is discussion about Bulldog (Cable and Wireless). I talked to someone re this only two nights ago and was really quite impressed with their option. Technically it is excellent, 4Mb, 20:1 contention ratio (usual home rate is 50:1), and to do this they unbundle the local loop and fit their own kit at the exchange.
BT only support up to 2Mbit at the moment, even tho our phone lines will take up to 8Mbit.
I am impressed, but I have an excellent option with onetel phone lines, and you cannot get onetel, or call18866 rates with Bulldog....
So not sure whether to bite the bullet, pay more, but get a disproportionately much better service, or stay where I am and go for cheap...
What would a money saving expert do in these circumstances?
Cheers,

A lot of people are being tempted by tiscalis advertising for their £15.99 1 mb service and very few people look much past price,
This can be a costly mistake if you look deeper into some ISP offers,
Ok tiscali do a 1mb for £15.99.
Ruralinternet are going to be doing 2mb for £17.99 and a business 2mb for £29.99.
If an ISP uses port throttling then they are not giving a true unmetered service when you pay for unmetered you should have just that full capacity downloads with no restrictions what ever
Occasionaly very cheap deals are advertised but when you look behind the price there is often a catch such as UK onlines amazing £9.99 offer when we look closer what they were not so quick on saying was that actualy very few people would be able to get their service at that price and the normal price would be £19.99 for any one not on any of the exchanges they have their kit installed at.
Tiscali and several other providers do not supply migration keys so if you dont like the service and want to leave you have to cancel your service first and then sign up with a new provider again not always good if your exchange has reached its capacity.
Do they have a call center in India for support you can spend hours on the phone getting nowhere fast.
I could go on but you get the picture I am sure.
We started our ISP as a community project and put wireless broadband into cumbria when BT said they were unlikely to do so and now provide both wireless and ADSL connections and would be glad to answer any questions that people might have to help them if they are unsure of any thing regardless of who they are with as I always say it costs nothing to help.
It was thanks to martins money tips I managed to reduce my phone bills considerably and have passed on the tip to many of our customers.

Eh? When you say "onetel phone lines" do you mean you either have onetel as a CPS provider or pay your line rental to them rather than BT? Either way, you still have a BT line, and can therefore get ADSL with any provider, unless Bulldog are bundling CPS to give a lower ADSL price (like TalkTalk do)...

leki - do you actually get 2mb though? ie. can you tell what speed you are connecting at? as some people will sell me credit card repayment insurance even if I'm not working0

Did you know that Eclipse Internet (https://www.eclipse.co.uk) are offering 2mb broadband for £14.99 a month (limited to 1Gb download - but additional Mbs are peanuts)? This has to be the best deal bar none in the UK!! I know several people who signed up and have had no complaints.
They were bought out by Kingston Communications recently so expect to see other deals as I think Kingston are keen to rule the roost
