  • Just a quick warning to people - the Autoaid policy does not cover pick-up trucks.
Does anyone know the best breakdown cover for pick-ups?

    Thanks, Russell

This Autoaid sounds like a far better service on paper than the RAC.

Are there any important terms to be aware of, other than they want you to have your CC to hand.

How far would they be prepared to take you, say for example your car broke down and there were plenty garages nearby but you wanted to use a garage you trusted etc, would they take you that extra mile/s or so?

Also would they cover you if you were in a Transit van.

    Thanks
    Hi there,
I don't think they do cover transits as there web-site states saloons, hatchbacks, estates and car-derived vans. I rang and they do not cover pick-ups.
    Cheers,
    Russell

They do, but it depends on the size.

  • Since the £120 AA renewal letter arrived this week, I'm very keen to switch to AutoAid! I'm not clear, though, if you're covered when car sharing? I do a lot of travelling with friends and we alternate which car we use. As an AA member, because it's me that's insured (not the vehicle) I could use the service if I broke down in a friend's car. Does the same apply with AutoAid? Would I have to pretend to have been driving to get the service? Does it only apply to vehicles that you own, so that I wouldn't be covered even if I was driving a friend's car (when I'm covered by their motor insurance to do so)?

I went onto their website recently to check something and the full details are available as pdfs.
You should be able to find the answers you want by searching the pdfs on their website if no-one comes back with the answer.

It says "You are covered in the vehicle you are driving at the time of the breakdown, as long as it is a vehicle within the terms and conditions of the policy".

  • I am due to renew my breakdown policy next month and despite being with RAC since I started driving I'm thinking of moving to AutoAid. I've just dug out my paperwork and with my RAC cover I've always got (and pay for) RAC Legal Care.

I guess I wouldn't have such a thing with AutoAid, but just realised that all the stuff RAC's legal Care covers must be covered in my car insurance surely?

    Thanks all.
  • I've just answered my own question! I rang my car insurance company (Churchill) to double check what the Legal Assistance Service covers and its everything that the RAC Legal Cover covers (feel a bit of an idiot for having both now!).

Churchill did offer me breakdown cover when I spoke to them which was cheaper than RAC (Churchill use greenflag) but still not as good as AutoAid.

On my second year. Had a year off between policies as my replacement car had free AA for a year.

Anyway on my first year I was involved in a non fault write off. Both cars were written off.

I had autoaid, phoned them and a local firm turned up after about 55 minutes.

Car was towed.... paid £180 for the recovery to their base.

Autoaid has a nice and easy form to complete and my £180 cheque was with me within a week.

Can't say I had any problems at all. Thumbs up from me. I'd probably pay more than what they currently sell the policy for.
  • I've had Autoaid for the past two years and last month I had the joy of using their service.

Plus points: No quibbles when I asked to be recovered (not repaired at the roadside) all the way to a garage of my choice some 300 miles away. Also, the refund arrived within seven days.

Minus points: It took three hours for somebody to come and recover me but I think this was an isolated issue. I was initially told it would be within the hour but they did keep me updated by phone.

To conclude, I will definitely be renewing my cover this year. :T
