I decided on the Nokia 5800 ExpressMusic. Went through the procedure of creating text message from the O2 website to get an upgrade code.

There doesn't appear to be an option to retain current contract.
It was working for me earlier this week - but I didn't follow it through.
:( Is this the end of the free upgrade? :(

    PS
Went into the O2 shop this morning
All was going well until it only offered a new contract - no option to stay with old contract
    I declined - of course :p

Next move: ring Customer Service 202

I've a couple of 'Paid up-front' phones with o2, neither will activate the upgrade text device, I just get a message saying that o2 are having 'technical problems' and suggests I ring CS.

It's a lie inasmuch as my o2 contract number works fine!

Looks like no upgrade for me.:(

"Pay up front for life" (PUFL) was an offer many years ago when O2 was part of BT. We paid £100 up front for a phone and free minutes / texts with no monthly rental.

It has turned out to be a very good deal for some of us. In particular O2, in deciding we were effectively on a monthly contract, allowed us to upgrade our phones in exchange for a promise to stay with our contract for another 12 months. This goose may no longer be laying golden eggs!

Phone upgrade latest - the golden goose may still be OK!

    Story so far:
    • on line upgrade not allowing retention of PUFL contract :(
    • O2 shop tried and failed :(
    • rang 202 on mobile - and was told 'no phones available on my contract - BUT I could have a £100 credit :j
I've now ordered the Nokia 5800 at £180 - so £80 to pay
So not quite as good as stphnstevey's deal - but not to be sniffed at!

    Hey Guys,

I have been on this contract but have never actually upgraded so still have my original phone. Can anyone tell me how to go about upgrading and getting a new phone. I just need a basic phone, nothing fancy but would quite like one. Am thinking of getting a new contract as O2 seem to be charging me for pretty much all the calls I make.

Any ideas what calls I should be charged for and what I shouldn't be charged for? Ie 0845/0870, Landline and Mobiles should all be included in the minutes given right?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Assuming you are on 200 mins off peak puffl - your free calls will be after 7pm to land lines (01, 02, 03) and O2 mobiles.
If you are on 50 mins anytime - then same calls but any time.

To check for upgrades go to https://upgrades.o2.co.uk/index.htm#getMPN
    Enter your phone number
Check the text you will be sent
    Enter the code

You can now see if you qualify for an upgrade - choose a phone and decide on keping your present tariff. But see my post above - it may not work and you'll need to dial 202 and talk to a human being :D

Are you sure you are on a puffl tariff? Do you pay a monthly charge?
Assuming you are on puffl then don't lose it! Don't upgrade it - it's valuable. I'll buy it off you :) (not sure that's allowed by O2)

You have to select the contract option FIRST as something like retain current contract and then select phones free on this tariff

Yes o2 do give £100 credit to your account but you have to pay £120 upfront to get the 12 month deal that has replaced the Net 50 deal i had with no free upgrade,or am i missing something

I tried upgrading yesterday. I didn't see an option to keep existing tariff or retain existing tariff.
