Back in 2007, I didn't understand the whole misselling issue and only decided to pursue the matter just over a year ago. The chap at NRAM, twisted my replies to make out I WAS aware - when I said we may have possibly been involved with a remortgage. Since we have been with The same provider since 2004, it's quite obvious that wasn't the reason anyway. The Ombudsman want to know why I cancelled and I feel a bit daft saying I can't remember!
I suppose it might be wise to simply give your reason for cancellation as being you could no longer afford the insurance. In addition, you could add that if you had suspected the policy was mis-soild back then you would have complained.

But, generally speaking, honesty is the best policy even if it makes you feel "daft".
  • Hi all I have not looked into reclaiming ppi before, I have had a lot of credit over last few years and sure there is ppi in amongst it all, I have very little paperwork. I know there is Martin's guide to read and I know it looks like hard work, is it going to be worth it? Any tips to get started? Cheers

  • Quick bit of advice needed please! I referred my complaint with Egg (Canada Square Ops) to the Ombudsman and received a letter saying they needed some further information re sickness cover and benefits I had at the time the PPI was in place, along with any details of how I could have met the payments on the card had I been incapacitated.

I can't find a copy of the employment contract I had when I took the PPI out, however I have got a copy of the employment contract for the job I moved to about a year after the PPI cover was taken out, along with copies of bank statements and savings accounts statements for about 4 of the years I had the card for. Will this be sufficient? I did send all this to Egg/Canada Sq when I made the initial complaint....

Since your complaint is about the SALE of the insurance, only your employment details at the time you took out the PPI are relevant. If your circumstances changed AFTERWARDS then this is not a valid mis-selling complaint.

You need to provide evidence of having no need of the insurance when you actually purchased it.
  • Thanks Moneyineptitude, I will check if it's at home somewhere but it was for a job I was in between 1997 + 2001 so am not hopeful I have the copy. I will just be honest in my response to the Ombudsman and give them as much info as I can.

I've had a eureka moment - I remember why I cancelled thanks to you saying about affording the payments! I got a new mortgage provider in 2004 and when looking at finances in 2007, realised I no longer had any connection with Northern Rock, so I stopped the DD with my bank. As my complaint in Jan 13 was based on the fact I thought it compulsory to get the NR mortgage. They say they will not consider the complaint as I was aware of misselling in 2007 and are trying to play the time barring card. Do you think the ombudsman will help in this instance?
  • Hi
I'm new on here so apologies if I've done this wrong,
I had a business and sold it in 2002 I came out owing 22k on a business loan with Nat West, I have been paying £100 per month to Shoesmiths solicitors with no hastle from them, outstanding balance is now 13k
Here's my concern I spoke to RBS and they have told me that loan is made up of 5 loans and 4 of them have PPI, I do not ever remember taking out PPI and am shocked that I had it, I honestly don't ever remember being sold this and now I'm not sure what's the right wording will be to put in the form as i was self employed, also the debt has never been registered on my credit file and I will be looking at an early settlement figure but obviously want to claim PPI first incase I get anything back,
Please could someone give me some advice as to what to right and how I stand being self employed at the time
    Thanks loads

Contact the bank, give your reasons for mis sale, it is possible these covered the self employed as they were business loans.

    Look here.

    Follow the guide.

    Look here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/ppi-loan-insurance
Follow the guide, it is simple.
Contact the banks and ask if you had PPI, look at paperwork you have to see if there is PPI on there, with a CC the PPI is shown every month on each statement, with loans it is on the agreement.
Most important, make sure you have valid reasons for mis sale.
If you need any help just ask.
  • Thanks amersall I've got my credit check file and am going to spend some serious time on this next weekend, might have more questions then :)
