I was unsure as to the account numbers of the loans I have had so I phoned them up and they gave me the account no's for 5 loans which I have had with them over the years, but said they could not tell me which ones had PPI and which ones didn't.
You could try a SAR request to try to find out which loans had PPI.

It'll cost you £10, but will bring up everything the bank has on file for you.

It certainly wouldn't be wise to just fill in an FOS questionnaire in the hope that the loan in question had PPI. What reasons would you give for complaint? How reliable would your evidence appear? It might even prejudice the loan complaints which actually had PPI.
  • Hi
I sent a letter to Lloyds using the template from this site requesting a copy of terms and conditions from a loan I took out in 1996 along with a cheque for £1. They have returned my original letter along with the cheque stating that 'you have asked us to pay into a product we do not manage'
Please send another cheque quoting the loan agreement number, if you still wish to pay this money into your loan'
I stated in the original letter that I didn't have the loan agreement details.
So I really don't know what to do now I am reluctant to use one of these companies that take a percentage.
    Any suggestions please ??????????
    Many thanks

    I thought the same.

Will phone one more time to see if they can let me know which accounts had PPI and which didn't.

If that doesn't work then I will send of a SAR and see if that can help.

    Thanks for the reply
  • Hi,

I found this discussion page so helpful. I would advise going direct through your bank/building society to make a claim as I did in January 2012. I had few loans through HSBC and always had PPI as they never once said it was optional! After going into the branch and asking for my policy numbers the lady then gave me the complaint number for HSBC who deal with the PPI claims I rang them up gave them all the information they then sent me form to complete took 2 minutes to fill in. I then received a letter from HSBC 2 weeks ago saying they have recieved the information from me due to the backlog this could take up to 8 weeks (which I was expecting) week letter they had written to me again with an offer of £3,738 I owed them £747 for my overdraft (no longer with HSBC) they have paid that off and I receieved £2991 in my back account on Friday!!! :)

In all fairness to HSBC they dealt with my claim so much quicker than I expected!! Very happy with the result..

The loan, I assume, is long since paid off?
You need to send a SAR request to the bank which will provide everything they have on file for you.

However, be aware that the loan is very old and the Bank may no longer have any information to give. So your £10 fee may be a gamble.
It's simply the loan account numbers you need, not the terms and conditions. You also need reasons for complaint

Remember, a claims company would do no more than send you the forms which you fill in yourself regardless.

Over the last 6 years I have had several credit cards and loans (most fully repaid) and I don't remember at all whether and if I ever had PPI or any other kind of insurance on them. I don't have any paper records either..what would be another way to find out?

Are the banks obliged to tell me if I ever had PPI with them for a closed account in the last 6 years if I write them a letter?

    Many thanks

No, but you can apply for a Subject Access Request (SAR). It costs £10 per lender and should throw up all information the individual Bank has on file for you:

  • Hi

I have just found out that I was charged PPI under the name of MSF Creditcare to the tune of £2290.

The loan was signed in Dec 1999 and from what I remember I was told I had to have this if I wanted the loan.

After around 3 years into the loan I ran into difficulties and have been paying it back at a reduced amount since. What annoyed me was they added all the interest for the loan plus the PPI (which I was unable to claim against because I had defaulted) making a 5k loan over 10k in total.

I have a copy of the agreement and am going to try reclaiming the amount.

The thing I would like to know is I have heard through a claim handler of an addition of 8% can be claimed of the interest had it been in my bank. How do you calculate the interest??

    Thanks for reading.
