I know I am very late in requesting information from banks / credit card companies in regards as to whether or not I had PPI, so if I have all the account details can I put in claims without knowing for sure if I had PPI?
Yes. That's what I am doing now. Although some of the banks (Barclaycard, MBNA and some others) do say that you can submit an enquiry through their form and if they find you have had PPI they will automatically turn it into a claim.
I do wish I had started earlier though!0 -
Thanks, Gonna-be.they say they take 8 weeks to respond to the query which would mean I would miss the deadline.(some will) automatically turn it into a claim for you if they find you are owed anything.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thanks, Gonna-be.
does this mean even if i get my stuff done through fca in time they can just sit on it until after the deadline and say Too Late! because i didnt get throgh all the hoops before end of august?
I am pretty sure (but bear in mind I am new to this!) that if you submit a query which they take 8 weeks to respond to, unless they automatically turn it into a complaint/claim for you, you would then be too late to make a claim. Therefore better to make a complaint/claim rather than a query in a lot of cases.not got my head round this proprly yet. are you saying if they decide my enquery deserves money back they do the claim but if they dont i need to complain?0 -
Four weeks to go and I'll be so happy...please let that be the end of it.
Every single thing you would need to know about logging a complaint about PPI has been posted on this Board yet so many fail to find it. WHY?0 -

Probably because even just part 5 of this thread alone is over 500 pages long; even a search still yields several dozen answers, not all of which are relevant or easy to understand; the process and tools have changed over time; and people are social animals who like to communicate with and help each other
I'll tack my own question onto that though - having gone through many, many pages of this thread and others, there are several regular posters who genuinely seem sick of the whole PPI thing and just cross with people making claims/complaints - so why are they posting on this forum? Have I misunderstood the purpose of the forum, and this thread in particular?0 -
thank you again gonna-be - you are patient and polite unlike some others
i suppose i am very disappointed after what the fca advert said about just needing your date og birth and your address to claim. i have no records from more than about 15 years ago cos life was a bit of a mess for a few years and i have no possesions from before that. i had mortgages and creditr cards before that and to be honest dintd know much of what i was doing back then because personal life was so difficult. more stable now but no way to get back papers thrown out along the way. not much chance of remembering much either . do know i had mortgages with bradford and bingly halifax and midland bank but no way of rembring credir cards and so on.
i know i had ppi on my alliance and leisctr mortgage on current house becuse i tried to claim on it when i lost my job in 2004 but they wouldnt pay out for some reason said i wasnt eligible so shoudl try them i suppose. no idea who insurance was with though . dont suppose alliance and lecs did it themselves right?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. thinking more about diffrent peoples circumstances
it seems to me this ppi cliam or complaint process is ok for people who had organised lives when they was taking our mortgages and cards but not for us who have had more unstable lives. But surley those who were more stable and organised were more liekly to know what was going on so how come they nhave better right to get theire money back?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. if people isn't owed their money back why are some getting it?
Who gets to choose who gets the money?
People put in a PPI complaint giving their reasons for missale. Or they give sufficient detail that the bank can see if it was missold.
If the bank, from the available evidence, decides it was missold, they give a refund. If they decide it was not missold, they dont give a refund.it seems to me this ppi cliam or complaint process is ok for people who had organised lives when they was taking our mortgages and cards but not for us who have had more unstable lives. Most people were not sold PPI. So, straight away you are looking a minority of people. However, those that bought PPI are likely to have bought it multiple times. It is important to realise that you can still buy PPI today and not all types and sales of PPI are bad. Most loan PPI was bad. Credit card PPI is around 50%. Mortgage PPI around 15%.0 -

You are very welcome
If I were you, to get the ball rolling, start with Alliance and Leicester. You complain to the bank, not to whoever supplied the insurance.
On the FCA website (https://www.fca.org.uk/ppi/how-to-complain/search-for-provider) there are 2 listings for Alliance and Leicester
- Alliance and Leicester (MBNA)
- Alliance and Leicester (Santander)
My suggestion would be to complain to both to be on the safe side.
MBNA is one of the organisations that allows you to do a query where they will search all of their records to see if you had PPI, and then turn it into a claim if you did.
MBNA link -> https://www.mbna.co.uk/support/ppi.html
Half way down the page "Unsure if you are Impacted" is where the form is.
Santander won't convert a query into a complaint, so I suggest you complain, and the worst that can happen is you are rejected for not having it.
Santander link -> https://www.santander.co.uk/personal/support/customer-support/ppi?cid=FCA
Half way down the page "Send a PPI complaint"
It's not your fault that you don't have the records. No one knew that this was going to happen! The banks are obliged to check all of their records if you ask them to.
(PS - I can post links now - yippee :j)0 -
Thanks yet agin Gonna-be - that is very helpful. submitted to both MBNA and Santander. I have also remembered that I had a Lombard loan for a motorcycle in 1983 and I can remember where I was living then so I have put that in too.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
