I can't believe nobody got my Nana Muscari joke:D
Maggie, I'm going to get some grape hyacinths, I didn't know they were bee-friendly. Are they bulbs?? And when do I need to plant them ~ August/September time, same as daffs??
LOL, it was too groan worthy to comment on!
Grape hyacinths may be pretty, but they're thugs and spread like fury!PM me your email addy and we can talk about them off list. Yes they are bulbs, but given how much they spread around in our garden I suspect they'll be plantable at any time of year! They are such a gorgeous blue, but look very untidy the rest of the year... But we just transplanted most out of our lavender hedge bed in the front to go into the the bit around the ornamental quince. Thought we'd got the majority, but seems we missed quite a few!
:rotfl: So plenty here - don't go buying any!
Ours are the common dark blue, but there's a pale blue variety too. Don't have that as I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to plants that I remember from childhood garden!

Does your Dad get care at home at present? The care home will need to do an assessment of your Dad's needs as not all homes can manage all patients/clients/inhabitants (or whatever word you think is appropriate - brain a bit scrambled just now). You can check out their status on the Care Quality Commission website. Your Dad's local Social Services should be able to help - they should have a list of homes local to him (or does he live with you at the mo?).
I think that most care homes have a 6 week trial period so both parties can get an idea of if they get on.
My MiL went into one from hospital earlier this year. She is currently self funding. OH and his brother went to visit one recommended by MiL's cleaning lady who has a relative with a friend in it, so she knew it was good. Do ask around friends and neighbours, it's surprising how many folks know at least a little about the local homes! MiL seems pretty happy in the home she's in, but she is very frail and doesn't want to eat and drink most of the time. Home is aware and does their best. She had her 90th birthday last Wednesday, and we had a family party at local restaurant on Saturday which she really enjoyed.
You really need to visit homes. Last year after a fall when she broke wrist hospital wanted MiL out of her bed so were just going to stick her in a home - we went to visit it, it was positively Dickensian! We did find another place with a vacancy which was OK initially, until the lady MiL had struck up a friendship with went back home as was only there for respite care. Then MiL got very bored as majority were too far gone to have a conversation with. We had visited another place that we'd have preferred her to go into, but they didn't have any respite vacancies. At that time MiL only needed respite care until her wrist improved sufficiently for her to cope at home. In the end that didn't work out too well, but at least she had a month or so back home before her health started failing too drastically for her to stay there.
I'm sure others here will have more info for you. Hugs - difficult times and hard decisions! _pale_0 -

Maggie has already given you better answer than I could, but I agree that there is usually a probation period for both the home and the resident.
They do vary a lot, but once you've visited a few, you'll get a feel for what you're after. For example, with us, the one that did silver service dinner and had air fresheners that squirted as you went past:eek: was crossed off just as fast as the one where rooms were so small no personal furniture was permitted.:(
Men are more difficult to please than women, I'm afraid, though they are usually welcomed with open arms, being the rarer species as the years progress! :A0 -
Completely off tack, as I know several people here like real seeds
Just been told on another forum about a new EU law which means that no seed can be sold or even given for free to anyone anywhere in the EU unless it is registered on the EU Plant List as an 'approved' variety (cost £1000 per variety if it meets their standards). The vote is May 6 and they are trying to organise e-mailing of UK Commissioner Catherine Ashton/

Hi Alfie - Hope you get a good home for Dad. What a time you've had. Good that you got a diagnosis which should make treatment better? Hopefully......
RAS - That's bad with the seeds.
We are still lambing & they're all jet black. It looks amazing. I must take some photos & kick start the blog.
CTC - goodness all those blankets. Hope they all sell really well. Look great when you have a collection of them.
Everyone seems to be getting gardening - I haven't even dug over all the beds yet.

was there an apocolyis at 1.29pm yesterday ???? that was the last i saw on here !!
[dave will be collapsed on the floor at my spelling...:rotfl::rotfl: ]
well my quiet day with the hoss's was interupted this morning by a phone call from the agisters brother [got ruby from him] saying MABEL was out !! i was puzzled why HE had called me, especially when he said he had tried to contact his brother first ?
anyway i set off home to find mabel stretched out near my gate....
i woke her up [very disgruntled !] and started to aim her for her home when a police car turned up... 2 policemen were laughing thier heads off ?? they told me they had had a report of a DEAD pig...and they had drawn the short straw to attend....[talk of agister made sense now...:o ]...well in between giggles they put the blue lights on and escorted me and mabel down the road.....
what was most embarasing was that one of the coppers was drop dead gorgeous [remember im desperate !;) ] and NO ONE can look alluring whilst driving a pig through a hedge !!0 -
Thank you Maggie & Dave for your care home information ~ my Dad lives at home alone & he's just had his care package increased so it's costing him an absolute fortune (he's self-funding). I do worry that he's too young to go into a care home but he's not safe at home either
alfie, that will be a huge wrench for your Mum & Dad after all those years togetherHope it all works out.
Maggie, my Sister has grape hyacinths in her garden so she's going to dig some out for me :j ~ childhood memories for me too
Another beautiful sunny day here ~ my raspberry cane is leafing up well so fingers crossed for a mini harvest this year. I was going to try & grow more stuff to eat but the recent weather has been rubbish & it's put me off.'A watched potato will never chit'...0
