Alfie, Dad will be fighting back against the infection and getting tired by it. Things like that often seem at their worst just before turning the corner. Lets hope he's soon on the road to recovery.
Choille, that's good to hear about the window, and the lambs of course, but proper windows are more exciting. Lidl's fishing tackle looked pretty good to me for the price. Most of what they were selling would be illegal to use in these parts. :rotfl:
Glorious day, which we will pay for with another frost. :(Nevertheless, got the first pole concreted in to be the starting point for our fruit cage.
A few weeks ago, I made another level for our nest boxes. At last, hens have started using it. As you can see from the picture, it features a communal area, as we've found some of the hens like egg laying together, rather than privately.0 -
Multi-storey......
That's amazing.
I see you have a light sussex?
How much do people sell eggs for? I have a glut & have just made a sign & plan to put some boxes at the gate & an honesty box.0 -
Alfie Sorry to hear your dad is still unwell, as Dave says hopefully he is just about to turn the corner and improve.
Dave What a fabulous array of nesting boxes, I love that they are so social :rotfl:
Choille Great to hear that you are getting places with the house, it is all becoming very exciting!
After helping our friends yesterday I am keen to get out into our own garden today. I have quite a lot of potatoes and shallots to get in and our Artichokes arrived yesterday :j I need to decide on the best place to put them. At some point as well I need to figure out what I am going to plant my sweet peas in so that I can grow them up the end of my shed.
There are so many decisions to make :eek:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

We don't have a lot of room in there for the boxes, as there's perch space for about 30, so we go up!
It's a 'sort of' Light Sussex. We have two and a plain white, all sourced locally. The main thing is, they are sociable, healthy and lay well. Some of our true breeds are not so great.
For example, you can see that one of the Dorkings in the picture has a beak ring. Two of those are feather-peckers, as is one Welsummer. In fact we are looking to maybe sell off our Welsummers this year, as they are lazy, unproductive and not very sociable.
We sell our eggs at £2 a dozen, though we rarely have many to sell off at the gate after regular customers have been supplied.0 -
Alfie, sorry to hear your Dad is still so poorly. Thinking of you and your family.

Rummer - I grew sweet peas in a plastic tray that had meat in & I got them going on a windowsill in the house. I planted them out into a teepee affair with chicken wire around it when it got really warm - boy were they successful. I had seedlings left over & planted them in the carrot & onion bed as that had been chicken-proofed, but do you know I had no carrot fly last year. I did wonder if it was the sweet peas. I kept cutting the flowers & I got them well into October. I kept seed - not that it's dear & will pop some in a planter ( an old plastic meat tray) soon.
Dave I bought 3 muddled Light Sussexs late last year - a breeder had them left over as they had gotten in with a wrong 'un. They have slight brown on their backs. I paid £1 each!!!!! They've been pumping out wonderful eggs all winter. I am amazed at this breed. What delightfully, pretty hens that lay wonderous eggs.
Rare breeds are rare cos they aint as productive egg wise. But the big producers hens go off the lay after 18 months usually.
We have snow now - over night - the lambing snow. It's bitter. How cruel the weather sometimes.
It's bitter, but the lambs seem fine & go in the byre. The other day the weird temp shot up to 23 degrees .........0 -
