Sorry to hear that you lost the kid, fk.
    Was it the nanny's first?
It could well have been Schmallenberg. It has struck goat herds, I know :( but nature does odd things every now & then so it could also have been something else.
Yep, I know anglo-nubians. I haven't kept any but I know the breed.

Like you, rhiw, we'll hold fire until we can, hopefully, sow seeds outside.

FK - Sorry about the wee kid. But as you say it wouldn't have survived alright.

Beautiful day here & Big Bertha had twin lambs this afternoon - Hurrah

Glad you can be philosophical about the stillborn kid, ferretkeeper. I find that even bad experiences in this business teach us things..... like not to erect chicken sheds on ground you're not 100% sure about, or to heed people who say you mustn't let your elm hedge produce a tree. :o

We finally cleared up the aftermath of the elm which died today. It took time to establish just how much of the hedge would die. We lost about 10' altogether. :( It isn't too bad, because that 10' ends at a gate, which might be widened if we go for a different entrance. ;) If we don't, I have a small stock of elms I'm growing on to fill the gap.

I have to confess :o:o:o there has been day after day of sunshine and clear skies this week and I have not set foot in the garden :o:o:o

Not that I have really done anything else purposeful but I have enjoyed the week none the less ;)

Ferretkeeper, I am so sorry to hear about your kid

    LIR, any decisions made?

Dave It always makes me smile that you are so well prepared!

I will try and get out in the garden today, after the Emmerdale Omnibus and a cuppa ;)

  • Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts, onward and upwards, and absolutely yes Dave, lessons learned almost on a daily basis in this game.

I've done pigs before but it is my first year of lambing and kidding, and it is the first pregnancy for both goats. Because I was new to it all I got a pregnant pig who had farrowed before and pregnant sheep who had lambed before so they were confident. Indeed they just got on with it, I came along to find the babies had arrived in both cases. That's a good lesson right there and not something that's really emphasized enough to new keepers. It can only get easier eh?

Last day of sunshine, apparently rain expected tomorrow? Not sure where or how much but I must, must, MUST get all the dry weather jobs done. Pressure's on but there's not enough hours...

Plus I want to go to the pub later  but I'm telling myself I can only go if I get everything sorted :D

    Have a good day everyone!

I'm not that well-prepared :o, I just happen to be growing lots of small trees at present.

Where I want to be better prepared is in stocks of fuel and basic foods, as these are the things that really matter on a day to day basis. A hole in a hedge never hurt anyone! :)

The fuel is not something we have as we are mains supplied and have not really given thought to alternatives :o. However I do have a reasonably full stock cupboard with enough food to keep us going for at least a few weeks. Ideally I would like to have more but my OH draws the line at that :rotfl: he already thinks it is odd the amount of carb based foods I have in the cupboard ;)

We thought we were well prepared tis year but the late freeze caught us out. If we had had the snow as well we wouldnt have been able to get out for extra wood supplies. So we're just about to order 5 cu metres of wood for next year and we'll top that up in November. We'll also be joining the oil buying group as well.

    morning all ( just)

sorry to hear the news ferretkeeper...sadly to say it is part and parcel of having livestock... and yes that is me;)

2 more piggy paddocks are now finished:beer::beer:
pitty as the pig auction was yestuday... but on saying that we do need to get arcs and water system in place..

Def going to prep more for coming years, especially wood etc.

Was thinking the other night, and did start trying to put my thoughts into a post, but i just couldnt word it right:D, with money not increasing in value so to speak, and prices going up all the time... I am thinking about getting a stock of stuff ( when the pennies allow me) that will not go off, that we buy... tinned food, pasta, rice etc... will only have a certain amount of shelf life, but I was trying to think of other stuff that i could build a stock up on.. that is increasing in price all the time..

teabags ( notice i get my priorities right:p)
washing powder ( when on offer or glitch)

and thats as far as i got on ideas of stuff:rotfl:

basically prepping for future price increases...

CTC, what we found was that the basics we use almost never come on offer so we just bought a couple of extra things with our shop and stored them away. I find it hard to strike a balance between being well stocked and having money tied up in purchases.

When we experienced family difficulties last year the food cupboard showed its value and I would always keep a sensible amount in.
