Dave, last year fruit in general was pants for a lot of people apparently, it was for me.......

There's hope for your trees yet! :)

Hmmm...that's interesting. The RHS was saying something different a year ago, about fungicides' effectiveness on Cydonia leaf spot, that is.

We have cleared up around the tree recently and I can give it a feed of blood fish & bone + mulch. Last year I sprayed both my tree and my neighbour's, but it didn't give more than temporary protection. This year I'll try earlier. Thanks to you, it has a reprieve! :j
  • Bit of a long shot, I know, but...

Talking about carrots:D, local fruit and veg wholesaler sells horse carrots for £2.25 a sack (10kgs) so had 2 off him yesturday ( free delivery) for the piggies....they really do love carrots...

...anyone know any place in/near London that does sacks of 'animal feed' veggies like this?

    Thanks :j

It might be worth going round the big markets and asking, also ask about their waste at the end of the day, they might give it to you free

Just googled these, so might be worth doing a bit of research/phoning in your area to see how much they charge, but say horse/pony carrots, or possibley 'b' grade carrots, they might be called something different in diff areas.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'd also try and find out where your nearest riding school gets their feed from for carrots.

Ctc, it HAS felt a long week hasn't it?

What goats do you have, ferretkeeper?
We used to have Saanens, Toggies & Angoras. All long gone now but we kept goats for years & bred a few.

I have anglo nubians, two girls and a billy, funny looking things with a roman nose and long ears! I can't remember how I came to choose them, good fat content in the milk for cheese etc I think, and local availability of pedigree stock - I got them all from an excellent breeder who is now a great friend too!

It was labour and sadly the birth did not go well :( nothing happened all night then this morning there was some blood and some pushing, neither a friend or I couldn't feel the feet, ended up with the vet called and she delivered the kid but he had died, trying to come out sideways basically. I wonder if I could have done more/sooner...

But the vet thought there was some deformity to the limbs/joints bit like Schmallenberg, so even if he had been born alive he may not have survived or maybe even PTS, that would have really upset me. As it is I am ok, been expecting a problem at some point as is the way when you keep animals, even experienced keepers lose some. I'm not happy about it, he would have been stunning, but on the plus side I do have milk now, which was the whole reason for breeding, and I'm very much looking forward to using my new milking stand :)

I've no idea what I'm meant to be doing today but looks sunny enough to get out and carry on with the gardening, had a splurge at the garden centre yesterday so must crack on and sow some seeds, this dry weather can't last forever...:)

Sorry it did not work out fk.

Yesterday was bitter but I tried to head home early and get an hour or so done before dark. ruddy trains cancelled and delayed!

After a sunny morning am about to call it a day and get some digging done (finally dry enough) and some seed planted in the attic.

    have a good weekend folks

What a shame Ferret, but if deformed and not survivable it has maybe saved an unpleasant decision :(

Bit warmer today and, if out of the wind, almost pleasant.

Sowed the Second Earlies, and in keeping with my patriotic theme, have used British Queen. Hmmm, wonder if you could have an entire fruit & veg garden with a patriotic theme? Ideas on a postcard................

Dug over one bed where we had kept the chickens for a while last year. Lots of earthworms :) Maybe thats why the mole has returned .

Will be watching the raspberries closely, we had to scrap the summer ones last year through disease and I have a horrible feeling that the autumn ones may also be infected

Still not bothering to sow seeds yet, ground feels too cold. Strawbs that were planted after being pot grown last year are really struggling to put on any growth at all.

So are ours! 13 eggs yesterday. :)

Did a deal today, swapping a dozen eggs for what the owner thinks is 20litres of creocote. :D

Will pick it up next week. Just hope it's not something else less useful!

Which side of London, Rainbow? I'm just outside south east, there's somewhere 8 miles away at Chislehurst if it's any help.
