On the theme of growing my first earlies went in today :j
Home Guard, a variety I've not tried before but it was half price offer 3 months ago.
Second earlies in tomorrow with luck, and the grass paths had their first cut since autumn. With a few insects about it feels like early spring
Buds are bursting on the pear tree and the sun is finally bring out the bulbs and hyacinths are filling the porch with their scent. Lovely!0 -

They're all used to the old cycle of seasons & planting, harvesting etc. so are in much the same situation as everyone else.
Unless things are being grown indoors with some heat I doubt that much will survive to flourish. Even then it will depend on what weather we get from now on. If it's another year of wash-out rain only watercress is going to be a winner
It is the extremes of weather that seem to be becoming the norm, so I think that you're right that GW are not that much better off in knowing what to grow than we are. Do we plan for drought or floods. For heat wave or freezing cold? Or, as happened last year, winter and spring drought followed by incessant summer rain and gloom.
BUT hope springs eternal so I'll be sowing some seeds as soon as the ground warms up and planning for tender plants started indoors to be planted out in early/mid May. All the soft fruit is starting to leaf, the tree fruit just beginning to do likewise, the autumn raspberry shoots are appearing so all the life thats been held back seems eager to get going.0 -

Meant to say, although its not as warm as Tuesday...goodness, was that only yesterday? It's nice where the sun is coming through the windows. On the north and east sides though, it's chilly. Sitting room is 8 degrees today! Needless to say, I am not sitting in there at all, just walking rather briskly through it every now and then!0

. Rummer,I only sent you the one I thought you would be keen to see. Do you know anything about lines in the breed? I do not!
I don't I'm afraid, I just know there are not many in the UK.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Ferretkeeper, we have 3 Medlars which we rescued from under bindweed here. They were close to snuffing it. One we had to move with a digger, so we pruned it right down, but it's survived.
Medlars are an acquired taste, which I've yet to acquire, but I still like the trees as ornamentals.
Although the weather has been harsh in the early mornings, we've worked a later shift since the clocks changed. I had to spend over an hour watering stuff today too!
Over on the other side of our little valley, sheep with lambs have just arrived, and with the daffs now blooming properly in the hedges, it really does feel more spring-like at last.....:)
Still going below zero again tonight though. Lucky our logs arrived this morning or we'd soon have been out of softwood. Oil should last till the last week of April, but the gauge is iffy, so....:o if it doesn't.
It's hard to remember, but I think my toms and peppers are doing better this year, in spite of everything. I've grown them hard, only taking them out of the conservatory when it's gone below 5c and opening the door whenever possible. Last year, they all got greenfly, especially the peppers.0 -

Re number two.....yes and no old enough. She is very 'correct' and her sire is smashing.
Number one really has something special about her though doesn't she? Thing is, I know we would decide not to sell a colt, (dh would break his heart and I think I would too, I am very soft these days) and so it could be a big pita.
I'm thinking hard. In any case, its not long till she foals really......I'd like to know how long she has being advertised for. Don't think they tell you that there do they? Only when last edited.0 -

Went up the ranch after work, hubby and one of his mates were like big kids, lighting another fire....came home and left them to it... It was sooooo nice to get back and start doing some more clearing.... fencers done a bit more today:T:T:T
watching grand designs now....Work to live= not live to work0 -
Speaking of fires, we have a biggie a mile or two north east of us at the moment. I think it's stubble burning or some such, as I don't see any blue flashing lights.....
...Tell a lie, the blue flashing lights are appearing!:eek:
Edit: Of course, it would be a daft time to be doing any kind of controlled burning!0
