Makes me wonder if there will be enough logs to go round in future and I suspect I know the answer :(

If this southward move of the jet stream is the result of the disappearance of the Arctic ice does this mean that we will have more long drawn out winters and wet summers?

The upgrading of our barn was structurally expedient (still isn't finished) but apart from also doing it to make proper dry furniture storage space, it meant that we'd quadruple our ability to store logs too. At first I resented spending on it, but now it's obvious we should have done it much earlier. :o

I've made an impressive pile of wood with all the clearance done this winter, though I suspect it will be less impressive when its cut up and stacked properly. Some of it isn't exactly top quality either, but it's free.

I think your leylandii will dry out pretty swiftly lir, though it won't have a lot of body. Mine is looking dryish, though it only came down last summer and I wouldn't think of burning it yet.

I'm not sure we've established a new weather pattern yet, but it would be remarkable if the continued thawing of the polar ice didn't have some measurable repercussions climate-wise.

I was getting some bagged logs yesterday and the upmarket stoves company who have invested serious money in the log side of the business told me they ran out of seasoned firewood in November, partly because of demand and partly due to the awful weather preventing proper seasoning.

I have friends who have been out cutting wood practically every weekend lately, rhiw. They used their large stockpile of seasoned logs long since. :(
I've wondered about wood supply for a long time now - think I've mentioned it before now on here. With the popularity of woodburners & (sorry LIR) wood pellet systems it's bound to be a drain on the supply. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just our country suffering the cold but, of course, it's vast swathes of Europe. Everyone is using more fuel of all types.

Maybe it's because we noticed the change in weather here years ago that we are more convinced than some that this could well be more than just a bad year or two? Maybe it is what we should come to expect? We keep hoping that his year will be different but, so far ...... :( It's not like these things haven't happened before.
The two main driving forces behind it are the prevailing southwesterly trade winds and the circulation of the water far below the oceans surface, the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) circulation. Water in the north Atlantic sinks because it is dense. Density of water is increased by both salinity and temperature - the colder and saltier the water is the denser it is. This deep water flows to the Gulf of Mexico until it warms enough to resurface and flow back north as the Gulf Stream.

Some 11,000 years ago the NADW shut down in response to subtle shifts in global climate. This slowed and diverted the course of the Gulf Stream to such an extent that the regional climate of the Northeast Atlantic became considerably cooler. As a result Northwestern Europe dropped back to ice age conditions within tens of years. It is now suspected that global warming may trigger a shutdown in the NADW, and a slowing or diversion of the Gulf Stream, which would ironically lead to colder climates throughout the UK and Northwest Europe.

Sun is shining this morning but it's also snowing in the wind. Not much & definitely no sign of it laying, though, thankfully.

LIR - I just hope it warms up & we get some really warm, sunny weather. It's soul destroying. The lack of warm sunshine makes us (well, me, anyway) feel like an addict on cold turkey. It's just hell that only those who feel the same can understand, I think. It goes way beyond just feeling frozen.

Pellet boilers won't be on wood (or exclusively wood) forever. The research is on using pelleted manure.

Bt yes, things might be feeling a longer term shift. I think the impact of ash and other tree diseases is also going to be a long time felt. And really hard.

Old horse on antibiotics, vet says I'm ok to do this for the short term.

The move to pelleted manure would be better.

Sorry about the old girl. It's a case of making her as comfy as possible now really, I suppose.
It makes it so much harder to cope with life's downs in general when you're far from on top form yourself.
Any sign of your warm, sunny break coming off yet? It would do you the world of good I'm sure.

Tbh, I thought vet might say to call it a day. Io explained I want her to make next week at least, and vet said they (the practise) think she has more than a week in her, but agree its week to week.

Going away now depends on her. I don't want to leave til she has but certainly don't want her to go quickly. :(

Of course. Absolutely understandable. I'd be just the same. Anyway, you'd never relax & enjoy yourself if you went while she was at home. I just wondered if you had something lined up for when it is possible.

We have seen a holiday cottage we like the look of, and the online diary suggests it has not a single booking for this summer. It is expensive, maybe that is why? Could be something to do with the country's economy though...

I have been offered a free stay somewhere hot, hot hot and exotic. Not private though , but we would only pay flights. :D. I probably cannot take it because flying long haul seems a bit of a silly risk. But it's a,axing to have such an offer :)

Ooooo lucky LIR  but, yes, long haul could well be a bigger problem if short haul is an issue. The cottage sounds good even if expensive. If it does the trick it would be worth every penny, eh?

Yes, flies into UK before the weekend and will head straight here. That said, if things did take a turn for the worse it would not delay anything, that is agreed and always has been. It's always been a given I would do things when they needed to be done, just now they can come so they are coming.
