Ooh, I'm interested in what you come up with as we have a slope complication too ;)

CTC, I'm sure I heard sun being mentioned on the weather forecast for Thursday  Bitterly cold here too, but at least the wind has died down a bit today.

PP, we made several sets of raised beds on sloping ground a few years back. FWIW we found that bed width is max 4', with a 2' wide path on downside so that you can work facing upwards.

Everything here slopes including the raised beds, chicken runs etc. We have one leg shorter the other.;)

Bitter here, with a dust of fresh snow. Have to go over to Inverness on the East about wisdom tooth.......
  • blinkin freezin here :snow_grin hope everyone's managing to stay warm and well? :grouphug::grouphug:

We're making raised beds here too, mainly to overcome the rubbish "soil" ie blue clay over granite boulders in the veg patch and shale over rock in the new garden bit

In the big veg patch we've used car tyres- they were free and we had no money to spend on it, they also warm up the beds and you can plant in them for extra warmth. They don't look pretty but it doesn't matter there, plus plants grow over the edges and hide them a bit. They can be used on slopes quite well - ours have a gentle slope which the tyres follow but the soil inside is level.

If I could have been @r$ed I would have levelled the tyres using the different sizes that we got. I've made one massive raised bed and walk around on scaffolding boards. I tried making lots of narrow ones and decided I lost too much growing space with paths and that it would cost too much to put a good surface down for wheelbarrowing etc, carpets just sank in the mud!

In our new garden there are mounds of earthy stuff that came off the surface before the gravel went down and to save shifting it all over the place we're making bigger raised beds, 3-4' tall.

I've always liked the big circular one in the kitchen garden at River Cottage, it's made out of corrugated sheets so we're copying that! We use the same corrugated sheets as roofs for our pig arks so it will keep the theme of the farm going!
And then we'll use the same corrugated iron but flat sheets to make a big long bed - 10' x 30' ish.

Can't wait to get going - except it's so cold I can't touch anything metal without losing feeling in my fingers - it feels better today, at least the pipes aren't all frozen outside - couldn't get any water to the animals yesterday til midday!

    Brrrrrr.
No snow just here but all the ponds & watercourses completely froze over during the night which is a first this winter.
No sign of any real improvement coming yet. We may get back to double figures by end of next week but forecast into early April still doesn't look promising :(

Total waste of time planting anything outside yet & if we grow indoors it shoots up, & gets leggy from trying to reach light. So, like me, the raised beds are staying wrapped up & keeping warm for now.

choille, you sound like a haggis!! ;):D

Rhiw, thanks for the slope/raised bed advice, that's really useful to know :)

ferret, sounds like you have been busy with your raised beds. Our soil is rubbish too (although weeds love it!!) so I think pots and/or raised beds is the way to go if I want to really have a go at growing some fruit & veg this year. I'll conveniently forget about the weather for now

Finished off the deep beds in the poly today, where the temperature reached a dizzying 18c at one point. Now I'm a bit stuck for excuses to lurk in there. :o

Under plastic, we chose beds only 1metre wide and paths of around 2', but outside we've decided on 4' beds with wider paths of 2' 6" because we want plenty of space for wheelbarrows..... something like that anyway!

Mr Dog's digger actiivities stopped early on Saturday and didn't resume on Sunday, but yesterday we had a visit from the Water Board, looking for the person with a damaged stop c0ck at xxxxxx Cottage. Suddenly, all became clear....:rotfl:
