  • Hi Rummer, I'm going to blatantly tout my wares here :o
    Please forgive me!

I have a holiday let in our village here in SW Wales - it's at the bottom of the Black Mountain, which you can see from the house and garden, literally a stone's throw from the National Park. I can suggest places to visit (as could CTC being a v near neighbour!) and walks from the door or there are loads of places that are a short car journey away, beaches, more mountains, market towns, castles etc etc

The village and immediate area is not especially picturesque, it's a former mining area and is the poor relation to the rest of the Brecons IMO. The cottage is a mid terrace on the main road through the village, but the neighbours are pretty quiet, and we've recently refurbed the whole thing. It has a double e/s bedroom, a single and a twin/double so sleeps 5. Price depends on time of year but it would be £400/week peak times ie easter/summer hols etc less the rest of the year.

The village has everything, an amazing history, a lovely shop stocking organic/local/unusual produce, a cinema, all takeaways for lazy nights...

Unfortunately public transport does not serve us very well so cars are a bit of a must unless you've got all day to get somewhere!

Oh and I would add dogs are allowed - No point trying to get walkers to stay then telling them they can't bring their dogs!

If it's not your thing I can suggest websites etc to find more rural places/properties in the area, it really is a lovely part of the world - I'm biased of course!!!

PS Monty's back on telly, hurrah!!!

Hugs to alfie from me too. :A

It was too dark to take photos by the time I thought of it last night, but here's the barn this morning:

The builders wl be back in a couple of weeks to finish off with Yorkshire boarding etc.

Today, the old home-made polytunnel goes. Our digger man, who has a smallholding at t'other end of the village, is having it. I've warned Mrs Digger that she'll bump her head on the internal frame, but she seems untroubled.

Davesnave you jusy need to get yourself a tractwrrr now to go into one of the bays:p:p

They have done a good job..

Ferret keeper we are up in the '3 letter named village' tonight partying with our 'Angel-ic' friends

Rummer, ideally if you had a smallholding anywhere in the country where would it be? and then why don't you see if there are any places you could stay for a few days.

or maybe you could do some volenteering on an organic farm etc for free, there is a scheme for this, and I cant remember what it is called.

Just a thought, it might be something totally different, but might give you some ideas for your garden etc

If its not of any interest to you Rummer, then it might be handy for any 'lurkers' out there:p

Huge hugs, alfie. It sounds incredibly stressful.

Everyone here is on the mend. Never thought it was going to happen. I even feel like a glass of wine tonight. First time in weeks. Most unlike me.

The kids have started to sleep better and we are getting some unbroken sleep. Makes a huge difference after seven years of bieng woken upwards of five times a night. That's probably the most healing thing: having some proper sleep.

It's agorgeous day today and we're off to the beach.

Rummer, I am not biased saying North Pembrokeshire sounds perfect for you. We moved here because it's such a lovely location. Our village has loads of activities within a short drive. Horse riding, boat trips to see dolphins and water activities, such as canoeing. There are lots of quaint market towns (not shopping places, as people here are mostly not wealthy so it's not geared up for spending, but interesting places for a cafe, markets and a bob around), there are beaches and countryside, mountains, rivers.... we are on the border of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion around. And then there is the much lauded coastal path. We are sort of in the middle of three counties (Carmarthen, and Ceredigion are within a ten minute drive). It's very unspoilt so if you're looking for touristy places like Tenby, you'd be better down south. North Pembs is pretty sleepy. A bit of a bygone era.

Hugs to alfie & family. Hope the health of the men in the family soon improves.

Rummer - Well, I'm going to break the mould & not suggest where I live despite it ticking all the boxes you are after & more.
However, in view of the last 5 iffy summers (the west is always wetter than the south & east) I'm going to suggest the New Forest. :Dhttp://www.thenewforest.co.uk/
The summer weather there is normally much better (last year being an exception) than over this side of the country.

Thank you for all the great suggestions, I will need to do a bit of research and chat to the family about it.There are so many places in the UK that I want to see and it is hard to decide.

CTC I have looked into breaks like that before and I think they would be ideal for me but the OH wants and needs a relaxing break this summer. However I may be able to escape for a while on my own ;)

I'm not going to suggest Devon to you Rummer. ;)

It may be nice here but it's so darned far away from you, so I've looked for something that isn't at the other end of the country ...and I've come up with North Yorkshire. Seems to have a bit of everything, from National Park, to seaside, and plenty of historic places to visit too. :)

    Old polytunnels gone! :D
