I want the red dogwood too. We have some very plain green ones in the willow copse and there's a black stemmed one called 'Kesselringii' somewhere, but the red and yellow ones are still on the list....I'm sure we will be visiting our local cheap nursery soon! :)

I think you might still have time to make cuttings of dogwoods Dave, this is just about the right time to prune, still no leaves on them here yet. Before I shred/compost the prunings I take a few cuttings from the pile, just to keep some plants in reserve.

I have been known to go around council/supermarket car parks etc with secateurs, they never prune anything properly and esp dogwoods they don't cut back hard by hand they go over with a hedge trimmer at waist height, oh well :(

Hard to find the nicer varieties there (midwinter fire my fave) but the red and yellow/green are usually easy to find.

For Pink Poppy, they do benefit from being cut back hard as it's the new growth that has the best colour. To keep a good height on a hedge perhaps thin out some at the base rather than chopping the whole thing down! They do take up a hell of a lot of space if left unpruned so ideal to fill a gap, maybe a shame to lose too much of a south facing plot to them, they don't need full sun all day.

In fact they look stunning on a west facing aspect, the autumn evening sun really sets the stems off :)

dreaming about my garden...... back to work

Morning Dreamers, how are we all today?

I am cleaning and baking up a storm this morning with a view to going out into the garden this afternoon via a trip to the dump :D

Dogwood is stunning and I have been quietly scheming how I can place some in my garden.

My windowsills are awash with chitting potatoes and I have been rummaging through my seed tin again although sensibly I know it is far too early for greenhouse things. I think I will wait until Easter time to plant seeds, or is that too late?????

    brilliant!!!!!!!

even though there is a funny side to these pen names, it will also be great for when i buy more piggies from auction, so I can say x batch went into Gammon Grove or Bacon Button Boulevard :p etc

I am slowly getting back on track, with earning some more pennies on line.

for those of you that are members of topcashback ( email for a referral if not) there is £40.40 cashback for depositing and playing through £10 on ceaserbingo ends today, so basically £30.40 profit. ok you do have to wait for the cashback to come through. but its a profit.

As I haven't done this type of money making for a long time, there are now loads more bingo sites that i can make this type of money from:T:T

Think I need to start keeping track again

Loving the piggy street names ~ fab idea, CTC!! :rotfl:

ferret, thanks so much for the dogwood advice :D I might go with the West facing suggestion as I need something to deter Council workmen from peeing up/through my fence, as has happened in the past!! Really good to have you on the thread, btw.

Lowering the tone a little more :o but does anyone have any suggestions on getting rid of cat/fox wee smells in the garden & discouraging said cat/fox from doing it again?? It's awful as the smell seems to be right outside my front door but I don't know where exactly it is. I've seen a cat spraying & also a fox scent marking in various places so I'm not even sure if the smell is cat or fox wee??

It can be hard to deter cats but they are put off by citrus smells, there are smells that deter foxes however I doubt they would make the place smell any better :rotfl:

I don't know about getting them to stay away but for the smell....

On our hard pathed surfaces I clean with some bio washing stuff everyone and then. Smells worse for a bit, then disappears. Alternatively, and more expensively, there are things you make up in to sprays designed for stable floors and bedding which 'eat' the ammonia and smell. That would do it I guess.

I am dithering over whether we should have a bash at a corner of hard landscaping or have a company do it. My gut instinct is that we would be better to have a company do the heavy stuff, and us do the lighter finishing work. I also need to get my head around how we lay the patio/terrace out with the stone we have, because I need it moved because I want to get the digger man in this summer to level, remove stumps and finally start on the back perimeter planting. I think that will be a huge bit of psychological progress here. Starting to feel more private and 'protected' and improving aesthetics. Feeling 'right' is no small part of the dream.
