  • How would you dry the hops, LIR? Has your friend got their own drying floor/oast?

Yes, some of the hail has been mega, rhiw. Glad not to be out in it :rotfl:

Well, friend says he has somewhere suitable in that it's dry, dark and heated. We have a dark barn, but not heated. and probably not low humidity in a bad summer.
  • Well it's official, I have a chest infection. Doctor also thinks I'm stressed from work and a bit depressed. So I now have antibiotics and am signed off work for another 2 weeks. I'm so exhausted I just want to cry. I'm feeling decidedly sorry for myself and wish I could go to sleep and wake up when I'm better.

I've never grown them but grew up when the hop-fields were still fairly widespread. One of the most popular varieties (which commanded a good price) was the Golding. It will depend on what variety will grow on your land. There's a similarity to wine in that the soil has input ....... terroir.

Machines put paid to hand-stripping which played merry hell on the hands & made them look like people had been playing in the coal bunker :rotfl:

I hear there's a bit of a resurgence in growing hops.

    Oh you poor lamb.

Can ypu sleep for a couple of days? Maybe a couple of good books but easy reads...nothing too demanding? Or films? Some chicken soup and something you love to eat ......keep warm, dry, and feeling safe.

Miserable for you. I had a nasty chest infection last year so you have my sympathies.
Sleep propped up. Not the easiest way to sleep but, if you can devise a way of dong it, it usually helps.

Alex, plenty of rest, nourishing soup and let the antibiotics kick in. Get well soon!

Regarding the weather yesterday,..it ended up being beautiful here all day, got a little windier in the afternoon, bu clear then out of nowhere just after half two, the sky went very, very dark, had the big hail like rhiwfield and then the roof of the house and barns, and everything began to shake. The vents on the boile and loo were claketyclaking and the house felt like it wa going to take off.

It was the nearest I have felt to the violence of a hurricane in many a year. D ran out to the hens, and when he opened the gate it picked him up and slammed him against the wall.....the birds were all in thank god, and nothing was going anywhere but rattling..

I was due to go and pick up parent from station and waited ten minutes for a lull, and then set off having said to wait inside if I wa delayed. Just five minutes down the road......nothing a all ...no sign of it.

On the way back parent pointed out what looked like an odd cloud formation, but was probably something to
Do with this odd wind pattern, Dh said it didn't last very long here, but it wa still breezy, where as closer to the hill and all the way to town wa still and bright.

Little tornadoes are fairly frequent in the countryside, too, LIR. We have often seen them swirling the grass as they go through. I think, because they seldom hit built up areas, that people think we don't really have them much in the UK but actually we do.

Strong winds are forecast for most of the week, I think. Down here we're also due over 2" of rain in the next 24 hours, too :(
Totally peed off with bad weather now.

This looked like a twister, but I have never seen one in person, and don't feel confident to say it was.

If it was it would only have been tiny tiny, as I say, a lot of rattling, but not much damage.

Although I knew they happened, I have never been near one and been aware of it. :D.

Been in plenty bad hurracanes though. :(. Another reason seaside living just doesn't appeal.....I associate it with hurracane drill and bad hair days, and salt damage to the car and exterior of the house and sand everywhere. Ouch.
