Dave
You probably were at school when the blizzard started; there were three snow falls, Boxing day 1962, the following weekend and 8/9 February 1963. The last two were blizzards and the second one started on Friday?
That must have been when we went to church as my father was away New Year 1963.
As I remembered it, I'd been in detention:o, which is why I was on the bus without my other school friends. So, if that's the case, it must've been that Friday in February.
That bus normally reached my home town just before 5pm. There wasn't another.
My memory is of sitting on the lower deck and hoping that the snow would not have covered the road at a place we called "Devil's Elbow." When we got there, the snow was half way across, so I knew it wouldn't be long before the drift cut the road completely.
I'm sure I vowed to skip detention if that sort of situation ever arose again, but it was years later, at dances, when we'd be marooned, or take hours to get home. I remember the drummer in our band was trapped for a couple of days in Barnstaple, and when he did reach our town, we loaded up a LR to take his folks supplies. His home was on the tops between South Molton & Tiverton at about 800'.
Little did I know my daft parents would buy a house up there too within a year or so! :rotfl:0 -
I think we got the '63 snow on Boxing Day in the SE. The SW started later.
Thawing slightly here on the coast but no sign of a thaw on the hills inland. More snow is expected today & tomorrow.
CTC - If you haven't found it here's the weather warning page for SW

As you say, most of the journey is motorway - M4/M5.
Dave's right. At the moment the forecast from Saturday gives the return of possible double figure temperatures but with rain. That'll make life interesting with the snowmelt from the hills.0 -
Well it's 3C and peeing down here ATM, so basically back to soggy-soggy again.
Looks like there might be more white stuff later, but we'll be on the edge of it, I think.
Anyway, I've just done the butcher run, so it can do what it likes now.0 -
Erm
We have sunshine (hides)
Going to lunch and for a short walk if it is still out/If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Its 1C here atm, and treated roads are running with water, but a lot depends on tonight whether it freezes and how bad the snowfall is. Regritted the hill road this morning, one neighbour who helped had decided to take the day off as the hill was so iffy, then when gritted was able to head for work afterwards, I think he was pleased! :rotfl::rotfl:
So will be topping up necessities today, and posting more parcels, after having managed to advance the tyre fitting by 24 hours so that we now have 4 brand new winter tyres fitted. I'm told to switch back in March when average temp rises above 10C and then refit them in October.
Not a hint of sun here, its been snowing on and off so far.0 -
Funny old weather.......
Meanwhile just west of us has had no real snow. Instead they've had the film crews out. I hear it's for background shots for next years Tom Cruise film. No actors - they're just filming the landscape. Saunton Sands is to become a French beach.
An enormous hailstorm has caused problems (& several nasty accidents) in the Plymouth area.
In all the years we've been here we've never seen a mini-snowblower on our lane ........ until now. Maybe I've complained enough to finally get noticed......... even if they are here after the lane became usable naturally :rotfl:
We could have done with you a couple of days ago, lads. Horse - stable door - shut :rotfl:0 -
Just snowed, very lightly, here again. Whoohoo.0

A bit more snow here now, but nothing too bad, but major sheet ice in our street this morning  I almost lost the 4x4 on the way to the horse...really should take advantage of the 4 wheel drive more often.:o
Having a commuter's nightmare, didn't get home until 9pm last night because of a fire next to the train line, and didn't get to work until 10.30 this morning. Fingers crossed I get home ok tonight! DH has just flown to Ireland for work until Sunday, so desperately need to get home to the furry children. Would've just drove if the car hadn't been playing up this morning, DH took it to the garage before he left though and it seems fine now, so have that as a backup tomorrow :T0
