DD2 made a snowman yesterday ~ unfortunately he's already lost his nose & one eye overnight!! :rotfl:
We have more snow forecast here as well, CTC, I'm a bit fed up with it already to be honest. Did anyone see the programme on BBC2 last night about the Winter of 1963?? I missed most of it but will watch it on catch-up as it looked interesting. Apparently the bad weather/snow etc. went on for weeks
YES i seen it, I thought it was fab...now that was snow , did you see the part where the kiddies were walking along the path ( I think it was from their front door) :rotfl:the snow was like high walls each side of the path, that must have taken ages to dig out..
I also like the cars:cool::D I love old cars....Work to live= not live to work0 -
Just waiting for DH to finish watching the football & then I'll be able to watch it
I love old cars too, but having said that, I'd love a 4x4'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -

I did, but I really didn't need to, as I saw it all first hand! :rotfl:
Some of the timing didn't really tie up with my memories though, as the big blizzard seemed to come in the school holidays, yet I know I was on the last bus to make it out of Barnstaple to my home town. Maybe I was visiting a mate? Anyway, I remember thinking, "Heck, if this thing doesn't get a shift on we'll never make it!"
My town's car park became a heliport, but there were no joy rides to be had. However, my mate's Dad was in charge of all the diggers clearing the main Exmoor routes, so he took us up there one afternoon. There were workers with snow rooms built into the side of drifts up there, which gave us the idea of building an igloo. It was so easy to carve out big blocks of snow and arrange them, just as we'd seen on the documentaries about eskimos, but we didn't have long enough to get more than a few courses up...:o

Personally I'd call it off. Sounds like it will cost you more (financially) to go than it would to stay and towing a caravan in icy, snowy conditions might just be a nightmare :eek:0 -

thats what I have been thinking about for the last few days.
Hubby and I spoke about it yesturday.. if we cancel we lose the stand money ( NOT CHEAP) but if they cancel we will get some sort of refund etc..
If we were just going in the van, then yes i would be concerned, but we would go, but towing a caravan in potential ice/snow conditions???
ok it is basically all motorway, m4 then m5, but still a concern:o:oWork to live= not live to work0 -
Like Dave I can remember that winter. We had a small corner shop in Manchester and our store of lemonade and beer bottles exploded. It was horrifically cold, burst pipes despite lagging and paraffin heaters.
While I can appreciate the beauty of snow, and the fun to be had by children, I hate the danger and disruption it brings, and the way it can trap vulnerable people in their homes, as well as catching out the ill prepared and the downright foolish.
We've got quite a few items to post, and we're repacking courier items into slightly smaller containers so that we can send via Collect+, as we dont think the courier will be able to collect from us atm. Our stock for sale now is now so low we will be hanging a closed sign on our online sales soon :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -

It went on for months.
On the moor here they marked the telegraph poles with paint to the height the snow reached (not far from the top in most cases) & it's only been as the poles have been removed/renewed that the "signs" have gone.
The schools nearly all stayed open - unless their ancient heating systems broke. Teachers slept in the schools if they lived further than walking distance away.
The only way to get feed in for the animals (& for some of the villages) was by helicopter.
1978 didn't do bad in the South West either
