  • Good idea ITSME, but some of the stuff is/has defrosted/defrosting, so its best to throw it ( typical we have been talking aobut food waste:o:rotfl:) and it make it worse the freezer was chocker with bargin reduced meat..:mad:

Lucky we bought a chest freezer last year, and it is in work with all our pork in it...

Hubby is on his way to currys now to pick one up... Cant wait 4 - 7 days for one to be delivered, and it comes to something when there is only one retailer in the area where you can walk in and buy a large fridge freezer...

    CTC, thats a real b****r!

Itsme, hope the thaw isnt too long coming, I'm sure you are well stocked with all necessities

Did this afternoon what I should have done in October, bought winter tyres online for fitting provisionally this Wednesday. Never mind snow conditions, they'll make for safer driving Oct-Mar and swapover costs are low at our local garage.

Was trying to understand weatherman last night, and the impact of warming of the upper atmosphere which could mean more winter cold spells. In any event winter tyres are a precaution that I should have adopted years back

And ordered grit box top up and a pothole repair by VoG council (acknowledged in 30 minutes) so a productive day :)

That's a pain, CTC. As lucielle suggests, can't some be saved by cooking?

Yes thanks. :) Even the oil arrived (just before the snow) which was what I was most worried about.
I really don't know why they don't make winter tyres or, at least chains, compulsory in the UK. I'm sure it would help ease the chaos that happens every time a bit of snow falls. Mind you, wouldn't help when, like here, it's darned great drifts which need a plough :rotfl:

The sky has been grim all day but now it's almost dark. Brrrrrr.

Chains were requisite in Milan. But who is going to police it? And are you really going to say to some one 'don't drive but wait for an ambulance' if they have no chains because didn't plan to drive? Bearing in mind I was told this year to get myself to a and e when I lost vision as 'ambulances aren't taxis'. It's ok in towns where taxis are viable alternatives...but the snow in recent years have been a 'new' typical. South coast extremes might need them once in a blue moon.....and we mainly cope ok without.

Not saying the are a bad idea, far from it.....but.....a difficult one IMO.

I don't think we do manage, though, LIR.
We always end up with abandoned cars & jack-knifed lorries everywhere which can stop even the ambulances, snowploughs & gritters getting through.

Sorry...I wasn't clear I meant a personal we ( though of course dh flipped his car on ice so even that's not true) rather than a collective one.

If we bring it back to the tax issue, frankly, I don't want to pay more tax to police it. I think people should act like rhiwfield and be responsible.....or face the consequences.

So much of the drama is avoidable.
  • new fridge/freezer in place, just got to wait 24 hours before we can switch it on.....

re- weather conditions/driving etc I think people should take responsible for their own safety to a point... like our rhiwie has decided to have winter tyres, people should 'prep' for certain conditions and situations to a point.

Sorry, I thought you were speaking collectively.
I take your point about policing but if someone ends up abandoning their car or in an accident or ditch the police will soon know if they were out without the winter tyres/chains. They could police it in much the same way as they do drink-driving. They wouldn't catch everyone but that goes for every crime.
If the snow falls heavily & the roads are blocked (whether by the snow itself or by vehicles) we - as in those in your or my position - can't always get through in our vehicles, anyway, even if they are the much-hated 4x4s (which suddenly become very popular ;) ). It's then a job for the air ambulance ....... if they can take off weather allowing, of course.

I think some driving I have seen recently in floods and snow should probably fall under dangerous driving.

The sensible way to tackle it might be via insurance penalties tor accidents when you ate not adaquately prepped for weather?
