Well, after the milder weather today I was surprised it was supposed to be heading here but I just had a snow warning in the old on board weather station so.....otoh quite likely to be from hearing so much about it.

Dh hoping to come home tonight just in case he got snowed out by not coming home

Alfie, they most certainly CAN get lami at this time of year.

If she has got as far as not moving then In my case I would call my equine podiatrist but as you use a blacksmith I would call a vet.

I would keep her in on shavings (with a mate) She is little enough to keep moving in a stable and the hard ground could make things much worse, the shavings will ball in her feet and support (with our bigger lami prone ones we use boots with pads in for the same result) .

    New fella huh? Details awaited......

Here, it's warmer now than it was at 6am this morning, but the sheep have gathered under the top hedge, which is a bad sign. :(

It's no problem anyway. I'm doing our tax on-line soon (if we ever reconcile the figures and various bits of paper!:o) and DW is making my costume, so beyond feeding the beasts and fetching logs...

Err, hang on, we're supposed to be having an emergency delivery of softwood this weekend! I do have some stuff in reserve though. ;)

I have enough wood in the house for a coue of days but we have a dodgey kitchen chair that I think might go on the fire too this weekend, then a non dodgy chair can come out of the barn to join it.

We just have a sprinkle of snow - like icing sugar sprinkled on top of a sponge cake. Tomorrow forecast is bad with blizzards, but doubt we'll get that here in Liverpool, low down and close to the sea. We'll find out soon enough! :rotfl:

she is moving much better now... she just wasnt when she was out the other day. we had her legs xrayed last year and there was a slight "bow" to her front legs... so i wondered if this cold snap might cause a bit of arthritus ??

I'd keep her in while the ground is hard none the less I think.

The bow...well......I remember you telling me about that (she is so lucky to be where she is)l. What was the impact on the joint...l.thats where any joint pain would be.

A key think to look out for is how she is standing. Imagine a pony standing 'a leg at each corner' square. So, all the limbs are straight (as nature allows, not in front of or behind the vertical.

The 'classic' laminitis stance is the front legs in front of the vertical and the back legs behind. It's sometimes called rocking horse stance, imagine a rocking horse on the flat.....but by the time it's got that bad they are in very, very severe discomfort.

Also, ours NEVER show rocking horse stance in the least, but sometimes the stand in some way toward the opposite stance....so imagine a horse doing that trick circus elephants did of standing on a drum.

Any deviation from the legs 'plumb' can suggest trying to avoid weight bearing normally...and that's what your first warning might be.

Do you know how to feel for pulses in their lower legs? It's worth getting the vet or blacksmith to show you so you can monitor them that way too.

If it snows I propose a daydreamers snow man show. No prizes, no contest..

Even the most lily liveried of us could make a little snow bird out of a snow ball!

At the moment I think that might just be possible; we had about 1" on Sunday/Monday night and frequest showers since. We still have 1" on north facing roofs, rough ground and parked cars but the roads and pavements are clear now. Not a lot expected here overnight either, although we may accumulate enough over the full weekend.
