our maverick had to have a new bearing this week, the noise was unbearable.

    An unbearable bearing.....:rotfl:

I too had a horrible noise coming from the front nearside a few weeks ago, but it turned out to be a consequence of driving through too many big puddles. One of the plastc pop rivet things securing the mudflap had popped out and the flap was just rubbing on the wheel.

Then I thought the diesel pump was cracking up, (£500 just for an exchange unit, never mind fitting!) but that turned-out to be a heat shield bouncing on the silencer. :D

Seeing the weather forecast, I spent most of yesterday out shopping, so we don't need to go anywhere any time soon. ATM it's blustery showers from the east and 7c much as predicted.....

Damp, dreary & chilly but no frost - at least none by the time I got up. I was rather loathe to get out of bed as I was so snuggly warm :rotfl:

Clear and bright today however it is bitterly cold so another home day for me :D. I get cold urticaria so no point in being in discomfort when it is still so early in the season.

There are so many jobs to do in the house over the winter and I am quietly avoiding them by planning for the spring :rotfl: To be honest I have most of the planning and am now just mooching over them and changing my mind too often :rotfl:

Since we are having a holiday at home this year I think I will try growing greenhouse veg. In the past I have started them we have gone away for a week and when I have come home they have been beyond saving. I am thinking toms and cucumbers. Yellow toms are delicious and I would love to grow them.

Just ordered a chicken coop online. Nothing flash, just something to start us off..... And a larger run (for the online offers) Now I have to source some chickens. I suspect the first may end up being the kids pets though.....

No reason why a pet shouldn't be productive though.

If the first hens are being confined, look for breeds that will accept that most easily. Oh, and don't be tempted to be 'kind.' and let them out free ranging when you can supervise, or you may have rebels on your hands!

It was the same for the house cats we were caring for. If we'd given them even the slightest taste of freedom, their life on the 8th floor afterwards would have been tame and boring. It's that anyway, but they don't know any different.

Hmmm, I want to free range them though. Can they not be out and about some of the time? My MIL's hens seem to bob around the allotment quite happily some of the time. This is where my total lack of experience shows. I think I'm probably going to have to find these things out by trial and error, do you think? Everyone seems to say something different/have their own way.

Ours free ranged, rozee, but there were times when we locked them in a large run with wired roof which attached to the henhouse.
That meant that, if we went out & wouldn't get back until later than they normally roosted up or if we knew a rogue fox or bird of prey was around, we could leave them with somewhat more hope they'd be OK.

It was rather like this as a detachable run. We put bars round it at the height which enabled us to pick it up & move it.

If you keep hens permanently confined you need to move their house & run to new grass fairly regularly. A few birds can strip grass quite quickly &, if the weather is bad, they would soon be pecking around in muck & bullets which is no better than battery conditions with extra wing-space ;)
