you can feel a bit of a nip in the air this morning... better get my thermals ready for this cold snap...
stonemason came in work yesturday ( non-ranch related) had another chat about things, not only will he do the stonework for us, but he will help in advise and help in other things too, french drains etc.. Plus he said I need to get hessian, so when we finish hacking off the front rendering, the hessian can be put over the front of the house ( keeps rain off the stone, and leaves the moisture out of the building) so will price around a few builders yards this morning for that.
perfumes done well on the bay, one was sold to the russian federation, so will need to get a price for postage..
Are you talking the whole facade of the house? Make sure you're sitting down when you get the quotes. _pale_
No, actually it may not be too bad.0 -

i know this sounds oddbut i was reading, and cant remember where, that some old historic building somewhere is reverting back to a method used then and that was to coat the stonework [exterior] with grease . i think it said olive oil ? or thats the equivelant in modern times? apparently it was a method used for porous stone work to weatherproof it.
im sure a certain miss marple can find it !!;)
but if restoration people are looking at it ,it may pay you to find out more ???:D0 -

I don't know the article you mean, alfie, but linseed oil is frequently used for all sorts of things in old buildings.
For instance, it's mixed with limewash & we also use it to seal the slate & flagstone floors. Modern sealers are rubbish & often leave a brownish varnishy look with time. Linseed - although a bit of a pain to apply - doesn't do this. There are also floor cleaners for stone floors which include linseed oil so one can wash & re-apply at the same time.
Ok I Marpled. Is this it? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-20553406
It seems linseed must also change colour on pale limestone. Luckily we have dark slate & stone.0 -
A house near here, of similar colour brick, has a wash over it just at the front, it's a lovely pale even wash sort of thing, I love it, and want it here if the historical people will let us. But everytime I knock on the door to ask what it is they are not there.0

Hed a ferret about and came up with this forum which might be useful, CTC:

I'm sure it was there, or something similar, where they were discussing rendered Welsh cottages.0 -
I went to see a chicken breeder this afternoon. That was fun! Still have no housing, but have a bit more of an idea of the set up I might have.0

ITSME I priced the hessian and its £40 + vat for a 50 yard roll, in fairness the stonemason did say to shop around, as one of his previous clients paid £70+vat a roll.
Alfie/Davesnave thanks for the links will take a proper look later on.
Can def feel the cold today, but at least it was dry.
