Rozee I would prob try and use normal fencing, and maybe try and wire up the fencing to a battery in the night. or something like that.

The reason is your little one might go and touch the fence in a moment of forgettfulnes.
Good point, CTC. Perhaps The thing to do is to have the fencing up but only connected when needed, at night and when we go out? When we fenced the property, we put some additional fencing up, mainly to keep the children from wandering too widely into unsafe areas where there are steepish drops and water. We have an area that we call, rather tongue in cheek, the orchard (there are a few apple trees) and it's totally contained by livestock fencing and probably about 200m long, a long narrow triangle. Our static is at the short top end and we'd probably keep the poultry in there. I am only worried that they'll escape over the livestock fencing at the front and get onto the road.... And I'm just thinking that livestock fencing may contain only the fattest of chickens....

ROZEE......... i would guestimate that 50m will give you a a 36ftx36ft+ aprox square. to safe guard likkle ones gett a roll of bright tape or thin rope and put small posts [2ft out of ground]spaced 2ft from elec fence and fix brightly colored tape between . once kids know not to "cross the line" without ma or pa, if they did , harsh but they will only do it once... you can get the power units which have low to high settings. thus hav it on low [just incase] daytime, up it at night.. just a thought. kids have more sense than we give them credit for .....

I don't know how much longer I can look at varieties of hen houses without buying something. I just hate parting with my money for things that seem aimed at townies with limited space. If I can sit on my hands for a week longer when I visit my farmer friend, I'm sure I'll be sorted. She's lovely and OH has also helped her out with some labouring work when her husband was ill. I've not been more direct with her about it because I've not wanted to trouble her about unimportmant things when her OH was so unwell and he's now passed away, so again, it's not been appropriate to ask.

The hens I looked at today were Black Rock, Orpingtons and some European (German?) sounding one with lovely lacey feathers and a French one pootle-something or other! All pretty lovely.

How much do the shocks from the fencing hurt? The kids are fairly sensible. They probably will be fine.

Where are those of you with building projects at now? We are a few weeks away from planning permission being granted (I hope!) Been interviewing builders on site and we're heartened by seeming to have a few who we would be happy to work with, a high standard of workmanship. This is where the recommendations from our building designer of competent experienced builders come into their own, as most of the builders we like are not known to residents in our village, even though they're all local-ish lads.

I was feeling incredibly stressed out about it all until recently but I'm less anxious now. Looking at sites and finished buildings seems to make it more achievable.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Shocks hurt more the shorter the length of fence. (and obviously more still off mains)

I am glad Alfie wrote it not me, but......

When I was about 10 I used to touch the fence for fun. ;) I still touch it quite a lot. It's less fun now though. Oh to be ten again!

    Rozzee, don't ask about building!
Heating ok, hot water,,,,,grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I like to read in the bath and have a stack of books waiting.....

On the more pressing side, the leaking bathroom is getting worse and we need to press on with the new one ( in the spare room soon to be used by another daydreamer). Otherwise, ours has a few tweaks (there is a minor leak in the roof which we need a roofer for) and a door hung, the right door handles to arrive eventually, and some odds and ends. I am actually thinking of painting dh's study next week.
  • was it a sablepoot Rozee? with very long feathers around its feet?

If they are Rozee even though they are lovely birds, a friend of ours had them, and she said they have problems with the feathers on their feet, so maybe not the best first bird to have.

Black rocks are hybreds, great egg producers.

with the fence etc, you can only do your best, but if chickens want to get out, they will, and if the fox wants to get in the run, it will find a way.... I got hubby and the boys to pee against the fence, and also when we clean our dogs poo up, we would put it around the outside of the run, so the fox will pick up human and dog smells:D

you just got to make sure you lock them in every night,

Silly me. They were Rhode Island Reds, not Black Rocks. Yes they were Sablepoot. I didn't notice their feet. As pretty as they were, I think I'd be inclined to go for the Orpingtons at the moment. She also had some Light Sussex. In fact, she had a lot of things! Mind boggling. Still don't know when to buy. Sensible says after half term. Not so sensible says as soon as I have somewhere to put them. Although, if the housing I get is big enough, maybe I'll follow my heart and just get some Dewlap Geese <3
