The Sunday boot had a vintage humane chicken killer for sale. Like an overgrown forceps :eek:0 -

Bigger, more domestic and very nearly being sent to live with rummer who would love her. I think it's rummer who mentioned wolfhounds.
She knows its wrong and infact, had the bird then wet herself in realisation of how she had transgressed.was very quick though, so that's one grace.0 -

I'm looking at buying some kit  and would like a bit of guidance if poss....
Electric fencing kit and a poultry house.
My farmer friend is getting rid of her old chicken huts. I haven't had time to have a look at them yet but if they look okay, what do I need to treat them with before I put any animals in there? I think they have been in storage for a long time. I know red mite can be a problem with poultry - is there any other nasties I need to be aware of?
How much electric fencing do you think I'll need to protect the birds. I'm thinking of buying about 4 to start off with. This looks like a useful starter kit http://www.agrisellex.co.uk/all-in-one-kits/poultry-netting-kit.html Will it be sufficient?0 -

Rozee I would prob try and use normal fencing, and maybe try and wire up the fencing to a battery in the night. or something like that.
The reason is your little one might go and touch the fence in a moment of forgettfulnes.Work to live= not live to work0 -

Oh yes it was me, I love them :smileyhea. Sorry to hear she is in bother at least she seemed to know.
Thanks for that explanation Dave, I was beginning to think that I had wasted my penniesTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
It looks like we may have some white stuff before too long.
Definitely getting colder.
Can't help with the chicken fence, rozee, sorry.
Ours were completely free range. If I'd have fenced them in we'd have had to clip wings to stop them flying out, anyway. We just let them roam but made sure they were in at night.
Unfortunately, there can still be rogue foxes which visit in the middle of the day; gales which blew the houses into the next field & a wealth of other menaces to contend with but ......
We only really used the electric fencing for the larger beasts & then only as a way to make sure grazing was rationed or to keep them off a certain area for a while. Having to keep the wires & tapes clear of earthing on steep slopes was tough going, anyway.0 -
LIR - was the wash a lime wash? On the building you mentioned.
Coming colder here, but not too bad, but supposed to be snowing at the w/e.
Had a great time away in Inverness playing at being a tourist & spent most evenings in the bath.......lovely stuff hot water.
Sorry about Attila LIR. Glad it was quick though.
It's so wet still & slidey about the croft - the sheep are growing their hooves in really quick. Don't want to be grappling with them too much.
One Shetland cross stood on a trough & it sort of seperated at the bottom of the V. Her hock was fast & she was panicked. I thought she was gonna break her leg. Eventually managed to haul it off her & was amazed that the only damage was to me with grazed shin.
Alfie thanks for the link - I ended up with a debit card being eaten when I was away.......I am so disgusted at the CO-OP bank I can't tell you. Used to be a great bank, but now it's worse than dealing with BT.
I'm getting some really weird pointed eggs - really rifle bullet shaped ones from an Orpington cross - they are strange, but very tasty.
Hope everyone is well - given up trying to catch up.0
