Talking of cutting down Autumn raspberries ~ am I too late to cut down/do anything with a Summer raspberry??I only put it in last year (too late to get any fruit) so I've just left it. I noticed little shoots emerging from the cane today so I'm hoping I get something this year.
Just leave the canes as they are if they didnt fruit last year, they should fruit this year. The canes that grow this year will fruit next year, and you cut out the fruiting canes after they've fruited this year.
If that doesnt sound too gobbledegook!!
Autumn raspberries are usually cut down Jan/Feb and then fruit on new canes the same year. BUT, as RAS advised, you can opt to leave them uncut in which case they will fruit in the summer.0 -
Saw some glimpses of sun today and got two beds planted with onions, as well as cutting down the autumn raspberries and planting a dozen potted strawbs saved from last year's runners.
 am I late in getting things started? What else can be planted now or is it still to early?Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

I'd think its still far too early for most things, the onion sets were remaindered autumn/winter sowing ones so will prob be ok and the strawbs had good root systems and should be fine.
Thats it for me until early Feb when its tom sowing. Not sure whether some people will start off leeks/onions indoors now though.0 -

Hmmm, of course he's right..............
BUT!!.............................
there is immense pleasure in getting your first crops and even though there are loads of other things to do why not find a corner that wont be built on and lift your spirits by growing something with the kids?
If you dont want permanent planting use containers, potato buckets, cucumber buckets, bean wigwams, strawb planters....worth the effort for the smiles they bring0 -

I am withrhiwie and I think for another reason in this case your oh is...not wrong, but perhaps not right either. Soft fruit planted in big enough tubs to be moved and planted or in the furthest corner will start to produce and can later be moved to where actually wanted. Remember, these things you buy as babies, so a year in a pot or grown on is a year developing, growing for later bigger crops. It's something to practice pruning on soonerand something that is never going to be 'dead' money in the long term.
Edit...I feel sorry for Rozzee, we are always telling her to wait and then when she picks something to wait on we all jump and say..'NO' get going.. Bear with us Rozzee, it's out of fondness you know!

Yes, pots & containers are a possibility, rozee ...... providing you have enough shelter from winds etc.0

just an idea..;)
why not get the kids to hunt all over the place for anything that will hold soil... ie; old boots, watering cans, plastic box containers, plastic feed sacks,[folded over] old buckets [pound shop] waste paper bins..
then line them up in a square with an opening into the square, plant seeds like salad, sunflowers, carrots etc...a real mix. and then the kids will have a square inside to have a picnic [when weather allows, surrounded by a mix of greenery and flowers.....0 -

Buying at boot at ungodly hour. Came back with a 50s skillet, a 50s vanity case and a DAB radio. Without a power lead
Very mild, things starting to grow and we're surely due some very cold weather in next two months. Not another year when plants dont know whether they are coming or going?0 -

In the park in London where dh saw a little cherry blossom not long before Christmas the trees have all burst into explosive blossom now. Here my fruit trees are still quiet but I am starting to watch with dread, weeds are springing into action and we have had considerable grass growth in the last few weeks. My roses, the most determined, are still putting on buds and pitifully flowering.0
