Before the weather started going awol, it used to be the end of Jan begining of Feb that the cold snap used to kick in, and if there was any snow it would be around that time too..
apart from a week earlier on, this has been a very mild winter, ok wet, but mild.
They have said its going to get colder by the middle/end of the week.
Talking about the weather:o they were saying on the news, the price of food is going to go up this year because of the lower grain harvest, bread, meat, eggs etc will go up, I have noticed the priced of veg go up
( ok the proper prices before what I pay;))
But ever mind what did we say at the end of 2012??? no doom and gloom, its going to be a better year all round:rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -

Aha, so the lie weather doctor is functioning correctly. Good to know:D.

I know I used to be a worrying optimist. Not sure now. Just a worrier probably.0 -
When we whipped out the fruit bushes here, I took cuttings & rooted bits to grow on elsewhere, just to see what they'd do. As a result, we have some fruit bushes ready to go now. Others we didn't like, we threw away, especially the raspberries and blackberries which had either gone wild or were muddled-up. (Like most things here!:rotfl:)
But....if stuff goes into pots it must be tended, which may be a large down-side.
While you are looking at fruit, rozee, you could consider going Welsh...

Yuck.
Spent an hour tidying ponds & then the mizzle came back.
The daily walk has been cancelled until further notice because I've rubbed the front of my ankle (combination of sock & top of walking boot) & the urticaria has started to come up.
So now I'll have to wait for it to go down. Reaalllly frustrating.
Luckily nobody saw me outside in my flip-flops with my trouser legs rolled up :rotfl:0 -
Buying at boot at ungodly hour. Came back with a 50s skillet, a 50s vanity case and a DAB radio. Without a power lead
Very mild, things starting to grow and we're surely due some very cold weather in next two months. Not another year when plants dont know whether they are coming or going?
Ooooohhhhh is the vanity case a Pixie Case? I love them and I have a couple of them that I use as overnight cases.
I was hoping to go out and do a bit of weeding today as it has been dry over the last few days however it has been raining overnight and the ground is flooded again so no point in doing anything to the soil
My OH has piled things into both my shed and the greenhouse so I am going to have to spend a day or two clearing them out and getting rid of things that have seen better days and that can not be mended. The gentleman who owned our house before us had loads of wonderful gardening and DIY things that we (5 years later) are still discovering.
Increasing food prices are a real concern for me (as for many others) as that is our biggest monthly outgoing after our mortgage. I have been cutting it back and have managed to do that without hugely impacting what we eat however it looks as if that is going to become harder and harder
Ah well as things get harder I will just have to get smarter :rotfl:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Hmmm, of course he's right..............
BUT!!.............................
there is immense pleasure in getting your first crops and even though there are loads of other things to do why not find a corner that wont be built on and lift your spirits by growing something with the kids?
If you dont want permanent planting use containers, potato buckets, cucumber buckets, bean wigwams, strawb planters....worth the effort for the smiles they bring
I'm going to order some fruit bushes and I was thinking, as I am wont to do in the middle of the night as the girls are nursing, what about putting them along the front fence? The front garden is South West facing and currently laid out in a very traditional manner with a lawn. There is then the front boundary to the property onto the road. We pulled down the ugly brick boundary wall and put "ranch" style fence there (livestock type with post/wood/wire). There's now a "ditch" in front of this where the foundations for the wall were, and then the (presumably council owned) grass verge onto the road. The ditch could easily be filled in with manure and compost and i could plant some fruit bushes along it. It's onto the main road but it isn't busy and there's no cover for the birds - one of OH's objections to my previous plan was that I was going to put them along the back fence which runs along the woodland. He thought it would be too easy for the squirrels, birds and slugs to visit from here.
We don't want to put anything that grows too tall here but as fruit bushes are so seasonal, I wonder if this would be a problem.
Can anyone see any issues with my cunning plan?0 -
More sad news on the equine front
The whole Helmantor herd.
Oh & we have frog spawn.
Without knowing your place, rozee, it's hard for me to say. Would you be likely to be scrumped from the road?0 -

I have always thought of exmoors as little boys ponies, (i love seeing little boys on those sturdy and non barbie ponies)but looks like maybe that's what the rates neice should get then.0 -

Rozee, cant quite visualize what you mean. I suppose an issue could be run off from the road (salt maybe). Dont know how easy it would be to keep weeded if its roadside of the fence. If raspberries, fence could be used to tie in canes and/or used to support nets draped over bushes.0
