flip the rain has been heavy all night, and there is no let up in it:o:o:o:o:o
back to work today:o prob finish a bit earlier..
with all the rain we have had over the year, what type of prep work should the smallholder/gardener do in the spring?
might should silly but would all this rain washed away nutrients? done this to the soil structure?
how long do you think it would need to stop raining for, for the ground to go back to normal?
AND if the rain carries on, no joke how do you grow rice:DWork to live= not live to work0 -

Dave - Seen this? I hope the stones are under the water.
For those that don't recognise it ..... it should look like this
But who's going to pay?
We are due a bit of dry very soon CTC, but I'd think individual plots will react differently. In some places nutrients will have been replenished, as stuff can be washed in as well as out.
Here, given 5 days of dry, I think we'd be back to reasonable, as we're very free draining, but I can still see me moving the new hen house. I think we can assume it will be like this again some time in the near future, so leaving it would just make a bad decision worse.0 -
I am guessing a lot of the nutrient content has been washed out of the manure on top of the stack, whoch is fine my be, I would like to use is purely to add humus to the soil.
Bet the weed seeds have not been washed out though! We need to find a pump we can afford to use the poo water as a water/ feed for the veg plot. Killing three birds with one srone......I need the water out of there.
It's bleak and ghastly again today. The wind outside woke me up a few times and the sky is a uniform uninspiring mid grey.0 -
Thanks for posting the pic of mabel, alfie, she's a beauty!! And so pink!! :rotfl:
Rummer, can I ask what type of wood you're thinking of using for your raised borders?? I was toying with the idea of getting some railway sleepers but think the cost will be prohibitive, even though we only have a tiny garden. I want the garden to look nice, but be productive. I'm also going to have to think of some sort of screening for the fence ~ my DD spotted a council workman relieving himself behind it the other day & the 'spray' was coming into the garden where I have my strawberry plants!!'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -

Put a complaint in with the council, saying what day it was, then they will be able to know what bin lorry and team it was..
also say how old your daughter was, also say he was 'exposing' his winky while having his tiddle:D dont think he will pee against your fence again;)Work to live= not live to work0 -
Lol CTC, I should have ran out & confronted him at the time (there would have been evidence!!) but I was just so shocked. It wasn't a bin man, it was a council gardener, he'd been strimming some bushes on land at the front of our house & I'd seen him walk round the side but thought nothing of it. Probably too late to make a complaint now (can't remember the day but could ask a neighbour who would know). There's a pub just down the road as well so he could easily have gone there to use the facilities. Grrr!!'A watched potato will never chit'...0

Honestly, it wouldn't bother me TOO much. Of course I would rather they aimed elsewhere than my berries, but here I encourage make guests and residents to pee outside especially near the chicken's favourite haunts so as to deterr the fox.
But, I often eat unwashed fruit and veg as I wander round, and somehow council worker pee seems particularly unappetising.0 -
Well, they've been there a long time, and it wouldn't surprise me if they have 'em all numbered, so they can pop 'em back in the right places.....At least "we have the technology."
But who's going to pay?
Yes, I'd heard they'd got them numbered but don't know if that's the truth.
The begging bowl will probably come out again. Always find money to buy something but never to maintain it properly
There's an article on it today - yes they are numbered.0 -

Was he a lone worker or part of a team?
If a lone worker I'd just tackle him next time he's round.
If he's part of a team, I'd wait until they come round again, go out & (in front of all his workmates) wiggle a little finger in the air & say "Ah yes, I recognise you. You're the one who pees up my fence".
He'll never live it down :beer:0 -
I don' t think he should have sprayed your strawbs, but they won't be fruiting just now. If it's owt like here just about all the public loos are shut in the Winter. It's disgraceful in this day & age. The Council spent over a Million on Gaelic signs that are spelt wrong. Hardly anyone speaks/reads it. Yet they can't afford to keep the loos open.
The other day went for a nosey at fitted kitchens - what a rip off they are. They won't give you a price for individual units - want to bring a designer in! It's like a great big secret. Ask the price & they tell half of what it was - Reckoned a plastic, gloss kitchen had been £15,000, an induction hob £450. Would not give individual unit prices. In Magnets there were no prices displayed anywhere. A hard hitting sales woman collared us & started spouting off, when we started totell her we were only looking for a few units & were having a second hand Rayburn she sort of glazed over & wandered off.......being trailer trash has its benefits!
Another disgusting night but it's now stopped raining - well I never. Neighbour up the road has just informed us we had over 1" last night.0
