The two really long beds that we have on our garden are now scarily overgrown and I think I am going to take the approach that I took to the other beds we created.

I am going to edge them with wood, lay a layer of thin cardboard and cover and fill with compost. To dig them out would be exhausting and this approach has worked in the past. Cost wise the beds will be quite reasonable to build however the compost will be expensive. We really need to start making a LOT more of our own.

Do you think the cut and come salad stuff would grow in a kitchen at the moment or are the light levels still to low? I am going on a health kick and thought it would be nice to enjoy some home grown :D

    We have plenty, but:
    • we are not where you are!
    • ours was germinated some while ago
    • it's in the conservatory, not the kitchen
    • conservatory gets heat from living room
I'd hang on a bit unless you can find somewhere very light and not too cold. ;)

Well, that was the first almost dry day for ages.:) It rained early this morning, but it's been quite pleasant since around 10am.

As we have a couple of extra able bodies here ATM, we did lots of moving heavy stuff around in preparation for work on the barn. We even found some wood that can be used on the job.:D

I've decided to sell the Dutch light panels from the old cedar greenhouse, but I've no idea if we'll get any takers on ebay. There are 20 of them, with a few damaged panes, so around 35 x 5' panes altogether.

DD1 noticed what we'd missed when she was waiting for the bus to work yesterday. Standing on the far north-west corner of our plot, it's just possible to glimpse the new and controverial wind turbine, peeping over the far hill.

One large wind turbine over 2km away isn't a big deal, especially as we must work hard to view it, but we'll have to see how it impacts on the valley from other directions. I think this valley is special, but it has no formal protection as we're not in an AONB. :(

We have 2 x 4ft sq. & 3 x approx 3'6 x 8ft raised beds. We've never filled them completely with compost. We do a mix of about 50/50 with soil at the bottom & compost above which then gets turned in after the first full crop.
More homegrown compost gets added each year or as necessary.
It allows us to have a depth of up to 2ft in the square beds without having to take a mortgage out for the initial compost.

It doesn't matter Dave - protected or not. Exmoor is protected but you can still see turbines set off the park. In fact, the whole North Devon coastline is an AONB & much of it SSSI. You can't miss turbines that are hundreds of feet tall :(

    That's bad. :(

At school, where we used to expect our little darlings to do some inference, I used to hear:

"But Mr Snave, it don't tell you the answer in the text!" every week.

But the 8-10 year olds could handle straightforward literal stuff.

They'd have answered your question, no problem:

"Miss Alfie, they'm just fick!" :rotfl:

I know, but as they have to go somewhere, it really comes down to councillors and county planners using a bit of common sense. To an extent, they've done that here, allowing the one that was eventually sited further away from the valley and refusing it when it was closer.

The problem is that they come in all sizes, and the Photoshopped pictures of what they might look like are sometimes very misleading. It's very hit & miss working out what the visual impact wil be. :(

Then there's the noise......I need to get up close with this one. Many of us are still a bit in the dark about that.
