I admitted today i haven't sorted out my want to plant bulbs too closely. The tulips risk looking huddled up in tiny patches of bed.
I have some geums and pinks i ahould have moved to a better spot in autumn.....davesnave, is it too late to do it this week?0 -
Lotus, why did i not know this about chickens? I will thnk about making a pen around ground elder patches.
I hate keeping hens in. Atm the snowball boys are in, but i let them out of their run at about four or five so they get an hour or so running about, but i have to keep an eye on them because do not trust my hedge road side there, or the boys to just walk out of the entrance.
I did notice someone cruising past the house last evening, and thought they were creepy slow, then saw they were letting the peacock cross the road and saunter in!0 -

And as they presumeably manure and feed the roots and you have to move them eventually from the ground, it could be said that they do more bad than good.
But they do love the leaves, give them a go at a really overgrown with ground elder area and within a few days, its all gone.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

If they deal with the top growth intensively enough would notthe roots weaken?
Interestingly, where we left carpet for a winter has less regrowth of elder than where we seived the ruddy roots out.0 -

In my research I've found this. You can weaken the top growth as much as you like, but it never gets rid of the roots, never, they always regrow, maybe if you manage to keep the entire top growth off for an entire season it may work, but they come up everywhere and so quickly, I can't keep up.
If you really want to get rid, dig the area and keep digging, any bit of growth, dig out, of course this doesn't help if you have established plants as do I.
On the other hand, it doesn't seem to do much to the currants (the raspberries I keep digging it out), but I am planning to do a big glyphosphate go at it tomorrow probably, no greenery on the currants or raspberries really, so it's a perfect time to see what happens.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Old carpet is brilliant as a suppressor. In autumn we use it to cover anywhere we don't want to get overgrown before the spring or anywhere we want to newly dig the following year.
We have some largish raised beds we want to plant up soon & they've sat happily under their carpet cover all winter.
There's no use getting old without getting artful0 -

Did the seeds arrive? I sent them last Wednesday.
Sorry to hear about your loss, alfie. The Outlaws have one of those beeping sensors on their property and it works well for them, but it's not an entrance animals use. OTOH, our friend has just installed one, and the neighbourhood moggies are ruining her beauty sleep.
No easy answers I fear. Letting Bimble & Co roam there at night is as good as you'll get, I suspect.0 -
LOL....I am on a mission this morning to see what stuff i can get for free:rotfl: Even though i have allways been a bit of a thrifty magpie for collecting stuff, Alfie just brought me back on track with a nice email....
anyway came across this site, where you can get free seeds for blogging about gardening, growing etc..
http://vegblogs.co.uk/
its basically a blog platform set up by vegetableseeds.net, which are really, really cheap seeds ( dont if they are the cheap seed people on ebay?)
If you like blogging etc.... its a good way of getting some freebie seeds..... but you do need to blog regular by the looks of it....
Think i will sign up, as it will be a good way to do a step by step progress on the new place....:D
I want to do a nice wigwam of sweet peas, am i too late to start sowing sweet peas?Work to live= not live to work0
