Just got back from town, coffee and apple danish, bank, PO and newsagents. And back before the rain starts as what was left of the morning sun was lighting up the blue-black clouds advancing from the west.
Wood basket stacked up, shopping in, time to hunker down and do my tax return.
Standing water on limestone here, hasnt had chance to drain away.0 -
That looks highly liveable, lir!
You just need an urn full of twigs now....:D
Still dry here, but not for much longer, I fear. FiL thinks he is putting perches in the new hen house this morning......
These are right wing ones he and DW have designed, with a steep slope and definite pecking order built-in.....Quite unlike my Socialist Workers' Party, level-pecking-field design in the other house. :rotfl:0 -
Still dry here, too, but black as hell & the gales came up just before 9am. The really heavy band is due through a bit later. It's coming through Cornwall at the mo.being pedantic.........they have been shorn and its a warmer time of year...
if it was MY sheep at the mo, they have a really dense long coat and would sink like stones....:o
did you like the posh word ?? pedantic..:D prob means completely different then wot i fought
True. Mind you we have to hold them down with crooks as they swim through the dip fully fleeced so they can still do it but not as far, obviously.
I think some farmers may have problems moving stock because they have nowhere suitable left to move them to. The ground everywhere is sodden. Foot rot & fluke is a real problem.
If the high ground is permanently sodden then the farmers with low-lying fields must be tearing their hair out.lostinrates wrote: »My builders come from near Birmingham. Over summer they worked mainly four day weeks, long days, with three days back with their families. Now, this has overrun, and they have started the next job, but are coming down as and when to do the fiddly bits, the bits weather has prevented, the tidying up after late in the day jobs. There will be some things that wait till spring now.
I 'met' my builder via mse, and have been chatting with his wife for years now. They came down to advise me on whether quotes I was gettiong were fair and he fell in love with the house. After a coue of weeks they asked if they could bid for it.
I have lived through various types of work at houses of my parents and I have to tell you, these guys are great. My mother put it well.....they have built good humour in to the walls. To still like your builders at this stage in the game is a good sign.
Ah right. I didn't realise the builders were that long-distance. As you say, when a job overruns builders have the next booked job to attend to, too.
Yes, having builders you can rely on & are good company is important. We had our builders here almost every winter for 10 years running. In fact, taken overall, they first worked here in the late 80s & finally left about 2009. We even had one who turned up on Christmas Day one year so got treated to a turkey lunch :rotfl:0 -
can def see the wind and rain picking up here, it is suposed to hit us this afternoon... as its so wet, its quite cold too..
looks as though we are not having an indian summer this autumn then:cool::rotfl: or maybe we are getting their monsoon seasonWork to live= not live to work0 -
I might be going off line, our telegraph pole is taking a bashing from the wind and we lost power today, I think it likely we will out. It's not far off hurricane sason warmup souwesters in the carribean strength of weather here......
If I am off for a while, Alfie if you make it up here great, if the weather is still bad we will know why you haven't come.0 -
Rather amazed we've still got power & phone on, too. It all went off for a couple of minutes earlier but came back on & is, so far, hanging in there. It's gradually getting worse here, though.
It's not a day to be out & about unless you really have to be.
Hope everyone keeps safe & dry.0 -
OK ....half of front fence is down, but considering its advanced age, I'm not surprised. Hopefully, having gone down in a piece, it will rise again in a similar way, but I'll need to create some new posts first. Need to get some hedging in there fast!
The chicken perches went in, but then, half an hour later, the whole 10 x 6 chicken house moved 15cm backwards on its base! Two months ago I wanted to add support posts on the leeward side, but I was told-off for attempting to over-engineer things again....Looks like I was right this time.:p
Anyway, we've levered the house back into position and banged-in a couple of temporary posts for now.
The recycling van went awol yesterday, so we had much fun chasing people's beer cans etc down the road, before deciding to pick up all the bins and just return them to the barn conversions. After that, we gave up & came in.
It's pretty hairy out there, but so far not much rain, which is good news for you-know-what....
Alfie, look away NOW!
Whoops! Too late....!!!:o:o:o

Rain due with you just about now I'd say, Dave.
It's now hacking it down here. Much, much worse than yesterday. Gutters & drainpipes not coping so there's a curtain of water. Quite fascinating, really. Like standing behind a waterfall
Fingers crossed but, so far, we've only had to go outside to stand up one blown over weeping tree planted in a lead 'cistern'.
Others will need a bit more help getting upright
Satellite TV signal isn't at all impressed :rotfl:There may be a brief respite on Friday but more wet and windy weather is forecast for Saturday and Sunday with a weather warning in place for the whole of Devon and Cornwall throughout the weekend.
Oh joy.0
