oooo that keith urban is a bit of allright isnt he:p:D
Davesnave Had you pm,
For me anyway..... I have dreamed etc of having a smallholding for, well, as long as I can remember, Went to young farmers etc, and when We started looking, I automatically started fantasising about every property/land we seen.
The place we got now... was the same, as it was within fingtip grasp financially ( went on a mad pang to get the extra money etc)..Even though we could see the huge amount of work that needed doing inside and out.. it sort of doenst click on the equation, The main focus then was find the extra money, and just get it... which we did.... I didnt think that other part of our lives would change, pressure of the changes in work, and everyday things, Kids, little things really, but they all built up to be one big stressfull pressure...:o:cool:
I have had a constant headache for over 2 weeks now:o
We have had the keys 7 months now... and even though we have done quite a bit, it should have been a heck of alot more...
Yesturday I did b%gger all, just mooched on the computer, watched tv etc, didnt even wash the dishes:cool:, and I though balls to it all, Work is going to have a serious overall, The range, we will plod along, and as long as that wall doesnt fall down, then hayho.
money that i am trying to save to do the range, seems to be going on other things, really do need to get a grip!!!!Work to live= not live to work0 -
Ctc, you have made progress there, we have seen the pic tures.
The thingis, daydreaming is very nice, but sometimes reality bites. This summer and my health could easily see us throw in the towel here. But we aren't going to...yet.
I have lost a lotof birds this year.
I need to get some fencing done and have no 'Pete'. I need to get a school surface down in the next few weeks and quite literally don't know how I am going to do it. But a client needs one, and Ruby will need one0 -

Progress is never as good as you hope it will be, and the stress-free life that most daydreamers imagine is terribly elusive. If moving to the country in later life, or with health concerns, it's important to do lots of "What ifs." The trick is probably to find something that will stand a change in one's coping ability, if and when that happens.
I have Pete, and he's wonderful, but by working in partnership, I feel committed. So, even though I know we could make more money renting out the stables, I can't see us doing that. While he'd survive easily enough without us, we wouldn't dump him. So, we shall continue to make a loss on the land.
And the Petes have their own timetables. So although I want him here, sorting out that extra fencing, and another guy we saw a month ago about repairs to the barn, it will only happen in Devon time.
CTC, you thought you were doing nothing yesterday, but really, deep in your brain, you were planning all sorts of stuff. It just hasn't surfaced yet.
Like DW and I. Neither of us said anything, but at breakfast this morning, with the plan in front of us, we both came up with the same idea for saving £££ if the new design works out too pricey.
And Alex, we forgot to go :j:j:j after yesterday's post where you said you'd soon be starting the big quest for the Daydream . You will fill us in on all the ones you visit, won't you?
Wonder where Stitchy's gone? Hope she's really busy with her business.....but not too busy for the allotment, of course.0 -
You allways say wise words Davie-baby:p
You are right... I get so stressed I just sort of down tools and just hide/stop functioning etc... but as you say I just start from scratch and start thinking properly again ( for a while anyway).
I know we are not getting any younger, and in reality only have a handfull of years to work on the ranch, and get it manageable and to get it working with us, not against us..
What I think is hitting us is, being tied to our current house etc, but if we lived in the new place whether roughing it living in the house, or in the caravan, we would be there after work, not just to see to the pigs so we could get some sort of work done.
Just wish the kids wouldnt be so stubbon and live up there, in the state its in..:o
The dark nights dont help, and the wash-out of a summer has totally hindered the amount of land clearing we could have done..
Right Def another cuppa time.. and I think I am going to scoff the box of maltesers that are lurking in the corner, before every one gets out of their flea-pitsWork to live= not live to work0 -

LIR.... why dont you use wood chip for the schooling area ? if you put an add /ring tree surgeons ,they will tip there for free as they often have no storage and its a blessing to get rid...
edit. also at a later date you can replace with rubber chips ? and you will have a mega load of good mulched stuff which if you hired a mini digger for the day would be easy to move.0 -

The problem with wood chip as a manege surface, alfie, is that it breaks down pretty quickly & can cause drainage problems.
Won't planning say which surfaces you have to use, lir? Well, possibly a choice.0 -

here in t forest most schools are woodchip as they DO break down easy and makes for good soft surfaces... not heard of any drainage probs but having said that LIR knows what her drainage is better than i...:D
re planning...i think the boundaries are already there and wouldnt be a new area, what she uses that area for is open to her.......me finks0 -
Very likely, alfie. Don't forget I live somewhere that means everyone practically needs PP to breath.
If the area requires any amount of drainage to be put in it's pretty normal for PP to be required, though, AFAIK.
I was basing this on the fact that lir mentioned rubber surfacing. I thought it unlikely she'd consider going to that expense without having the proper base (drainage, sand or similar) put down. If it's just a surface spread on a field then, no, it probably wouldn't need PP unless, say, it's near a water course or similar.
teehee - Actually it was you that mentioned rubberlir just said "school surface" but, outdoors, that brings rubber to mind.
As a newbie to the National Parks I think the Forest may find it will have many of the same bureaucratic problems..... give it time0 -
Its a shame that things are so stressful for some daydreamers atm.
CTC, if its been necessary for us to move in the past, then the children have been considered but have not stopped us from moving.
Itsme, hope you're not having to turn the heating down
Davesnave, really sympathise, when we moved in we didnt cause very deserved aggro with the vendor ( who had stripped out all light fittings and left bare wires!) because he'd moved elsewhere in the village.
Choille, keeping fingers crossed for the time when you can move in
Lir, at least one consolation is that you can see progress being made through the upheaval.
Alex, all this to come
In contrast we're having an easyish time for a change, just plodding on with the mini business and starting to get house ready for the early festivities.
Speaking of which, for LOTR fans, here's the Embassy Theatre in Wellington0 -

Stress free here today, because it's Sunday. Most of our closest neighbours virtually hibernate at this time of year and on Sunday mornings not much moves before 11 am.
I observe brushcutter & lawnmower silence, though not everyone does.
Vendor here did her best in trying circumstances, so I try to remember this. Ended up sitting next to her in church last July, though she's no longer local. Still see relatives and ask questions through them. e.g. "Did you know about the telephone pole, installed in 2008?" Openreach have not replied on that.
My parents never consulted me, even when I was old enough to know better than them! :rotfl:0
