Well, I suppose so, but I just can't believe how short the days are now. I was all set to knock up more cement when I realised it was almost dark! :(

I've done lots of silly little jobs, like laying paving slabs outside the new hen house, putting posts in, reading the meters and processing toms for the freezer. It doesn't seem to have amounted to much. :o

One of the pubs in the village is closing, and so is the shop, which only opened two years ago.:( Once it lost its PO status there was no way it could be viable IMO. It will be the older people who'll be hit hardest, but it's a tough call for anyone to run a business in a village so close to a small town as this one is. It's a close community with lots going on, but there just aren't enough people, especially young families. Also too many Baby Boomers pushing house prices up......Err....hang on! :o:o

We are just about to get a posh deli. I cannot decide if I am thrilled or appalled.:o

We have an acclaimed village shop in t'other direction, but everything I have bought there is mouldy so I never do any more, great shame really.

Baby boomers have been the vendors around here over the last few years. It's been younger folk in their late 30s/40s buying places. However, they have tended to be business owners from elsewhere moving to an area where they get more for their money.

When we first moved here there were 3 Building Society agencies within a few miles drive. Now one has to go to BarneyRubble. There were 6 POs in villages within around 7 miles. Now there are 3 & those only open for short hours.
Everything has gradually been pulled back into the larger towns - schools, hospitals, fire/ambulance/police stations etc.

Older people can't stay indefinitely where there are no services unless they have younger family members close by. So, when an area dies, it dies across the board for all age groups. It's the countryside that's dying.

Posting from a pub near Ross on Wye, been previewing and researching all day and evening. Tempted to get one lot just to make Alfie's (and maybe Lir's) eyes go green. Will buy it if it doesnt sell for too much, which I think it will :(

DW must be lucky as she stepped in dog sh*t, inside the pub  Salubrious o/n stop or what :o

Offcuff buys from Okehampton (£1/£2) selling at £15-£20 each. That'll do nicely :)

  • LIR... thank you, havent got anything booked except the 3 day craft thing in exeter. Will prob go and visit Alfie some time ( if I am allowed) and maybe pop in to see you. But this will not be until spring next year.

Rhiwie... doo poo inside a pub:eek::rotfl: sounds a lovely place

Llanbydder has a huge slaughter house ...used to go there every week, many, many moons ago, to pick up minced tripe..

I think they mainly do sheep, and cows..

Lampeter is nice, Love Llandeilo, but flip it is expensive:eek:

Davesnave, a group of people couldnt open the pub, and make part of it a shop, like a community enterprise? so it will be like a little community hub? with a pub, shop, meetings, creche, classes etc? maybe your panto meetings:p, which cant be long now before rehearsels start

Nope, don't think so. The pub isn't owned by the people leaving it, so I expect it will get a change of use and be sold as a house in due course. It is a cosy sort of place, just like going into someone's house.

The other pub was bought by a consortium of local people, who then re-vamped and re-launched, and it was that which probably sounded the death-knell for the other one. I'm not sure what facilities they have and whether they can take over stuff like skittles etc.

There's a very well run village hall, which is in use most days. The Panto's only rehearsed in the pub at an early stage, when everyone is still seated with scripts.

The shop is community-owned, so we'll have to see what happens there. When we came here, I offered some money towards a share in it, but heard no more. I suspect that was because the person I approached suspected it might not pay back in the short term. I'm grateful to them anyway! Most people just have small stakes, like £25. ;)
  • Its a pitty community shops etc are closing, even though people moan and groan about prices etc, they dont realise how convienient they are until they close.

Its is absolutely piddling it down here....which is making it feel cold...

better get on with some more work...:D

Logs and pellets both arriving on Friday. Thank goodness. Used the last of the hardwood now, and the difference is really obvious this time.

Just started raining here, so we've been lucky. :D

Absolutely hammering down now to make up for it, though! :(

Managed to time the picking of our best russet apples so the slugs only got a couple when they fell, but we have another tree of smaller ones still not quite ready.

Some of the earlier, multi-purpose type apples haven't kept for even a fortnight. Luckily, the hens seem to like them half mouldy!
