I really would like to find out about our ranch...I know it was an old battery chicken farm, going back to the 50's I think.. and it was suposed to have been the weighbridge master's cottage? ( old colliery drams used to go go down to the canal... and somewhere on our land is the old weighbridge hut???
I'm guilty.
I don't know how much Welsh stuff I have, though. I have the complete 1881 Census & various other records but they may not cover your patch.
Also ......... I got bored with it about 3 years ago so haven't bothered to load any of the software on to my new 'puter.I'm not even sure that it will be compatible with the OS now.
You would probably be better to contact someone who acts as an 'Online Parish Clerk' for your area or a Look-Up Volunteer.
They tend to have better local knowledge which makes quite a difference when dealing with things like old records & Census Returns. If the whole area is only listed under the village name you'll need someone who has an idea of the lay of the land & the direction the Enumerator walked.
Other than that I can help point you in the right direction for some info if you have a Local Studies Office you can visit.0 -

Think I've got a couple of Glamorgan census cds from when we did our local history book ten years back. If you need them Itsme let me know. Or ask me to check out specifics.
CTC, a word of warning, tracing back can get very addictive and time consuming, and, you've got a whole load on your plate atm to deal with. Maybe save it for dark winters nights0 -

:rotfl: Yes, totally addictive.
If you have the CDs (& can still use them on your PC) then you'll be able to give CTC any info they hold, rhiw.
I've sent CTC a link to some old maps to see if they show her property but I think, if the place was originally a colliery building, that the real history will probably be in the mine records.0 -
Brilliant..ITSME... we are on there...1877:T
Alfie... that accident happened in 1858? and I think there was another one later on..
Been meaning to go to the city civic centre, as I am sure the old mining records might be there..
Would really like to know what came first the house or the mine...Work to live= not live to work0 -
I see my namesake's on the list of the dead! I think I've said before, I have Welsh ancestry, from around the mid 1800s, but I think it was possibly in Powys. The family tree just has an arrow and the word "Wales," and the nearest relative to that is right on the Powys border.
Great news about the scan, alfie. :T
You aren't a bad Mum, CTC, rather the reverse. There are some hard lessons to learn out there. When DD2 finished school at 18 we said she had to get a job, and when she "couldn't find anything," we told her to sign-on. She hated going to the Job Centre, so it wasn't long before she was pounding the streets, a much better CV in hand, and being severely dyslexic, we knew it would be tough. However, a manager at Clarks saw she'd done a bit of customer-facing work with us and gave her a trial. The rest is history. She's now at uni, but still has a contract with Clarks, so every holiday she's got a job already lined-up, either on the shop floor or training staff.
We have the right aspect here.:D Like the place on Bardsey, we also have the winds to contend with, but not as fierce as theirs. Indeed, despite all the rain this year, we've enjoyed living here more because there have been many more calm-ish days, after a couple of years when it always seemed to be blowing.
I don't suppose Pete would like it much, but if we were a bit younger, I think we'd put a couple of our acres down to ash trees and similar, to be part self-sufficient in firewood. As it is, the rent for the land is paid in logs and I'll get a certain amount from the hedgerows as I maintain them.
Not much history in this exact location, though the earliest OS map shows the farm nearby. The names of places have also changed substantially in 200 years, which must reflect both the names of individuals and fashion. For example, who'd call their property 'The Shanty' nowadays? :rotfl:0 -
Cant flipping sleep now:rotfl: been trying to do all sorts of searches etc..about the house..
Going to see if I can 'sneak' some time off work to go the city archives..
I really do fancy a cuppa, but then I know I def will not be able to sleep..
Right off to see If I can find any more info I have allready found the ref numbers I need for when I go to the city archives:D
One of the original mine owners had the same surname as ours, and I know hubby's father's family is from just down the road from the ranch...lolWork to live= not live to work0 -
my eyes look like 2 pee holes in the snow this morning:rotfl:
Yep you were right it is addictive....:D When were looking at an old delapidated cottage before, I tried doing a little bit of research on it.....
curiousity is killing me now..... will they have old maps in the local archive?Work to live= not live to work0 -
Ctc, we went to our local history centre ( what they call the reference library for historical docs over this way) and found all the old maps. We were allowed to handle the originals, whoch felt crazy. Looking at early eighteenth c maps of our house and what was once its 'estate' was awesome and raised lots of questions as well as answers. We needed to pay for a photography licence, which is ok (but was about 25 quid) but i plan to do it again to get a better snap of that map so i can print one out for home reference, maybe even home decor!0
