Urgh. The uorses needed a rescue mission. Rugged tb was the only one ok. The never rugged horse was shaking with cold as were the others. Just wind and rain for too long i guess. So, winter routine is patchily starting now :(. I don't feel up to it, and its a night mare for the grass, as means poaching a bit of grass to get to the turn out i need them on at this time of year, Grrr.

Ctc, frnech drains are most useful practical and simple, And have been usedthrough out history. I want a french drain rather than ditch acorss one field, but cannot afford it.

Alfie, you tame wood chip man.....does he know a haulier? If ao i might get a haulier price and see if i can get a big load of chip this winter for the barn again...if its going to be a long winter it will be useful.

I could do with a practical bod here atm, we are trying to plan low level hay mangers here and ending up in disagree ment about them all the time. Hay mangers at a more natural eating level are better for the horses and if they were continuous the whole length of the wall would be much, much easier for me, i could probably fill once a day at the worst times of year and less on better days. But we have a silly horse so needs to be dead safe.

    O
D girl knows her october deasline is coming and has perked up again, galooping around yesterday. So will suggest the vet hold off a few weeks longer. But making somewhere she can eat more comfortably takes priority in that case!
  • We have French drainage around a fair bit of the house, CTC.
It ensures any surface (or spring) water is kept well away from the building.
When we first moved here the house would often become an island surrounded by water. Over the years we've laid miles of drainage, gullies & kerbing. Now we watch it pour down the lane leaving us well alone.

    No!......Not what you're thinking!......:p

She's my old (old?:rotfl:) dentist. Trouble is, she comes with a hefty price tag.:(

While the National 'Elf man really hasn't done much for me, I'll stay on his books, because he'll probably move on in a year or two, and then I'll be re-allocated. ;)

Edit: Alfie, can I also be Minister of [STRIKE]Teeth[/STRIKE]? Dental Wellbeing?

Hi all, firstly Choille, very sorry to hear your news, condolences from the newbie.

Interesting what has been said about wood pellet burners. We were lucky enough to get some heating oil off freegle last week - when we went to collect it, we got chatting to the guy giving it away who explained he was having a wood pellet system installed (will also be supplying this next door neighbours, not sure how this will work).

He favoured it over a wood burner as it was more controllable and economical. He was a professor of some sort and had loads of books on the environment in his study so obviously has a keen interest.

He was going to be charged to have the remaining oil in his tank (about 200L) removed then it would be dumped so was happy to give it away and we were very happy to receive it given the price of oil :D

It was a bit of a bodge job getting it syphoned out of his tank and involved a headlight washer pump, some pipe from the aquatics centre and a couple of 50 gallon drums :rotfl:

Katep23. Rhi introduced last week show the domestic scheme is slightly different to the commercial scheme last year, but i think mulitple dwellings might be eligable fr the commercial rhi or something approaching it.

Tbh, it almost makes sence for us to install a commercial one too, if we did not have so many other financial demands it really would be sensible to take debt for this, because the rhi for commercial schemes are astounding.

Our neighbours are getting a commercial system from the same supplier....a log rather than pellet, necause they can devote five acres to wood growing and the buffer tank issue is not such an issue in commercial scale buildings like a milking parlour.
In a few months i can tell you all how we are finding it.
