After Davenaves bid for dual ministerial office I pmd Alf to ask whether she was after the Prime Minister job if the Soap Box Party wins the next election. Here's her reply:

"Rhiwfield, or may I call you Rhiwi? As you know my responsibilities are such that, at this moment in time, the whole concept of me accepting leadership is not remotely on the agenda. The Party has not yet achieved the electoral breakthrough it so richly deserves and it would be improper and premature to speculate on who will lead this great party of ours to our glorious victory. But if, through popular acclaim, I had to reluctantly accept that challenge, and make it a reality, I would only do so with the support of fellow daydreamers, themselves making the nearly equal sacrifice of taking on the burden of higher office. And Rhiwi, if the event were to ever occur, and if push were to come to shove, No 11 is waiting for a man with your vision. Stay focused, I value your support, Alf"

The alternative fuel source posts are extremely interesting. I for one don't want to be reliant on just one type as it seems too much "eggs in one basket" to me. My ideal would be to buy somewhere that I have enough land to grow trees to burn logs, solar pv on the roof (the better ones even generate on overcast days), a small wind turbine next to the house and, if I was lucky enough, a stream to power micro hydro. Don't want much, do I? :rotfl: How much is achievable remains to be seen.

In other news, it looks like we're getting the agents in this week for valuations. It's cross your fingers time!

Alex, number one on my "power" list would prob be good aspect so that advantage could be taken of passive solar. That, combined with excellent insulation would do away for most heating needs.

TO FLICK A SWITCH AND A LIGHT BULB COME ON....:j

TO NOT DON WATERPROOFS TO TREK TO SHED TO GET SMELLY FROM DIESEL AND PRAY THAT THE BL**DY GENERATOR ACTUALLY STARTS......

TO NOT SIT IN FEAR THAT A FLICKERING LIGHT MEANS AN EVENING OF DIAGNOSING A TEMPERAMENTAL MACHINE THAT ALWAYS DECIDES TO PACK UP ON A WEEKEND WHEN NO RELEVANT SHOPS ARE OPEN............

AND WHEN IM PRIME MINISTER I WILL MAKE ANYONE I DONT LIKE MUCH LIVE HERE................:D

Alf, I know we've been down this route before but, for off grid emergency lighting and laptop/radio power, until genny can be sorted, a small PV system to charge battery storage would work and prob be fairly cheap to put in place. PP shouldnt apply as you'd lean a freestanding single panel (wouldnt need to be full size) against a convenient wall to face south (moveable as you want)

Its not going to power that much but, particularly in summer, could cut out genny use at times and save you cash.

And save you grubbing about the genny late at night!!

    Let's do a flit. :cool::D
It's much easier to live a relatively self-sufficient life somewhere with a slightly better climate than the UK.
Over here it's starting to resemble masochism :rotfl:

    Ain't it just!

After two drought winters since moving i am beginning to feel very, very wet. Changed twice today already schelpping about it barns and rain.

Horses have stayed in so have seemingly hundreds of hay nets to fill later too. I hate filling hay nets.

I find it really relaxing and would happily do it for you ;) now what I did hate was filling and lugging water buckets for mile across an icy yard. Happiness is an automatic watering system.

    Wild weather here today!

Been talking to OH and we need to find a way to make our garden lower maintenance yet still producing a reasonable yield. I appreciate this is everyones ideal however we can make ours better.

We have automatic water (unless pipes freeze! )

Or the water in the trough part freezes so the automatic feed won't work. :rotfl:
It leads to lots of tentative tinkering with ballcocks (bet the automatic censor gets hold of that :rotfl:) to free the ice without breaking the mechanism.

Ooo - ballcocks are allowed :T
