My pear tree is flowering again! Third time this year. And on it is a grand total of just 3 pears that managed to set in that cold wet spring period. The greengage, a reliable annual cropper, didnt manage to set a single fruit. Apples are very patchy, some ok, others part set but fruit very small, unripe and dropping off. May/June strawbs set fruit again, but rotting in the rain.
This weather is just mad! Back on the net again now after switching off as a thunderstorm was passing
The Ebay fireworks expected last night turned out to be a small catherine wheel only. 28 watchers produced not a lot, bunch of window shoppers
Neighbours lit their woodburner night before last, and they are only in their 30s!
Will be expanding rhubarb patch this autumn, good stuff for bartering given supermarkets charge about £4 kg. I've found toms are a good cash crop too, as are runners, french and broad beans. Cucumbers are a bit harder, and a lot of people seem to think winter squashes are only for carving at halloween :eek:0 -

Anything's possible. She's picked-up since drinking a huge amount, so that's good.
DW has noticed that Mrs Chatty drinks from daft places, like the insides of the piles of tyres we have for chicken vantage points.
So....out with the drill early this morning putting big holes in all the uppermost tyre walls, to stop them collecting water.
But it's all guesswork. You'd think with tons of space, varied diet, nice mown grass and shelter/shade, a few chickens would be able to stay pretty healthy.
Blue sky here now, lir.0 -

I wont make the smart Alec reply about shelling them first
Must be gutwrenching to put up with the agent, would hate anyone having the power to mess me around that way
Dave, read that battery hens dont suffer the same diseases thru lack of exposure to things like red mite/wild bird illnesses and lots of antibiotics. Whereas your hens are undoubtedly happier!
Lir, night temps are dropping into single figures, so add a gloomy wet day and shorter daylight hours and the need for nighttime warmth increases.
BTW, the sun has come out0 -

We have had one horse wearing a rug on and off this summer. They seemed ok this evening, but tomorrow is single didgit for us. I normally reckon sub ten degrees is rug time, but it gets warmer after tomorrow and i think its going to be dry so.......
But I am cold nonetheless.
I need some new winter clothes, fleeces etc. and just need to smarten up too. I darenot think about it yet. I have been looking in online sales, but i am a fussy beggar.0 -
There was a horrible tragedy involving a kyack{sp?} Canadian canoe a few days back & some of the kiddies were tiny - 2 & 5 years old. They haven't found the father yet. People do tend to forget about how easy it is to get into trouble. Really terrible thing to happen.
My hens went off lay a little while back in May/June when the temps dropped here. Egg laying is controlled partly by light levels - that's why we get no eggs in the Winter, maybe a connection? Give em a drop of Cider Vinegar & a pinch of Poultry spice?
I put my 7 week olds out & it's been so midgied I feel evil --poor wee chick chicks hiding in their house. Their hearing is incredible & they come thumping out into their pen if they hear me coming & I'm not a heavy stomper, but they must hear the caravan door.....
It's been a disgusting day here.0 -
We do the cider vinegar thing already, choille. In fact there's not much we don't do, but wild birds are aconcern as regards the importing of nasties.
DW decided she didn't like the look of Mrs Chatty's recent poos, so this afternoon she administered olive oil, whether Mrs C wanted it or not! Anyway she's eating, drinking and talking again.....Looks like it'll be OK, but she'll stay isolated till we know it's not catching.
Feeling guilty, as the hens should be on new ground now, I battled-on this afternoon, continuing the foundations for the new hen house, which I'd stalled on.Just finished the middle bit when it peed-down on the new concrete.
Was the kayak accident near you choille? It was all over the news, but I'm afraid I didn't pay much attention to the exact location.
Switched energy tariff today and fixed our price until April 2014.As it's supposed to be £84 a year cheaper, I must have been sleeping on the job there!

I heard about that tragedy in the news Choille....so sad..:o
This has got to be the wettest summer on record...Yesturday we had a bit of serious thunder and lightening... 2 houses in Cardiff got struck by lightening and was on the local news...
The curtesey sp? caravan is coming today:D I am hopeing I dont fall in love with it, and want to buy it:rotfl:
I was right about the neighbours up the new place, I phoned the footpath people for a form, and 'she' told me there had been a complaint about the water from the culvert over-flowing into someones garden.. so we know which person it is;) As we told the woman on the phone the water isnt just coming from the culvert, but another pipe taking water away from the houses, a mahole drain over-flowing, and the heavy rain we are having...SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO my suspitions are right nice to your face, stab you in the back....Well.... I have a few options.. better not follow the first one I am thinking of:cool::D
I might start taking a leaf out of Davesnave's book...:rotfl: I know a lovely spot for my manure heap:D
Will try and take some pics of the caravan...
I hope someone will have some good news soon, as I need cheering up nowWork to live= not live to work0 -

Hi Just passing through this thread - and am hoping to join you all over here...
OH and I are planning to take a side shift in our lives - more than a life change. We are fairly solvent but have had enough of the rat-race lifestyle we exist in.
We have a 12 year old son, which for now is our only reason for not selling up and moving into the sticks. I want to keep chucks and have a simple way of life. Currently we are in East Anglia, but are looking at rural properties - in Wales, with around an acre of grazing land.
I almost feel that I (well into my forties) was born in the wrong decade, and the frugal lifestyle my grandparents lived is actually my vocation in life.
Have any of you any advice/tips for us? Thanks in advance.0
