Hi Just passing through this thread - and am hoping to join you all over here...
OH and I are planning to take a side shift in our lives - more than a life change...... Currently we are in East Anglia, but are looking at rural properties - in Wales, with around an acre of grazing land.
I almost feel that I (well into my forties) was born in the wrong decade, and the frugal lifestyle my grandparents lived is actually my vocation in life.
Have any of you any advice/tips for us? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I have a few tips, the main one being do some serious research and decide what the term 'frugal lifestyle' really means to you, and whether you both mean the same thing by it!
My idea of 'frugal' and my DW's concept of the same thing remain some distance apart! Someone may have to compromise.
The second main consideration is income; where's it to come from? Here, we're not all smallholders, but those who are rely on something beyond the smallholding to pay the bills.
My rather basic knowledge of East Anglia suggests that there are smallholdings there, often left over from the hey-day of market gardening, and some of those are in the cheaper price bracket. What's the attraction of Wales over the Fen country? Just curious.0 -
I'd echo what Dave wrote.
The land, whether used for growing crops or rearing animals or both, allows us to reconnect with nature but the investment in money and time seems to always mean that an additional income is needed to fund a "simpler" lifestyle.
Its not that simple though, it can be really hard work and you often need to be a jack of all trades to avoid expensive labour costs.
If you look to supplement income with sales of produce, or run a small business, then all the commercial realities kick in. Hard to maintain a customer base if you're snowed in in the Brecons!
But dont let me put you off. I escaped from the London Rat Race and never regretted it. London has an unhealthy preoccupation with money, while with us it is quite healthy as it allows us to buy food when our crops fail0 -
well done Alfie
pitty you could have a sale like that every week:D
changed electric suppliers in work and they have sent me a bill for over £500 for the month:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Welcome CGG.
Getting somewhere you really like is a must - check out any potential neighbours - should have taken my own advice!
The canoe accident was nearish here. We go at least once a week as that's where most of our client's are, our work is.
Well done Alfie - that's a marvellous profit.
Dave - I have had hens die & not know what's going on. It's a worry, but you're doing everything you can by isolating. If you've had it very wet then that can cause micro-organisms to flourish in the soil & you should move pens up a slope rather than down - so you keep moving them upwards so any run off goes down - if that makes sense.
CTC - hope the caravan is a good 'un.
Free 150 item listing over 8 days come the weekend - that's gonna send me mental.....well, more mental than I am.
Glorious day here, a breeze so the clouds of midgies are off hiding thank goodness as it's been worst ever for them. So behind outside & on the build it's almost overwhelming.0 -
We have a 12 year old son, which for now is our only reason for not selling up and moving into the sticks.
Unless your son is a hermit, make sure there's decent public transport that's not likely to be axed.
Living out in the sticks isn't easy for kids who want to see their friends/take part in after school activities/go clubbing (when older), or for parents who have to ferry them around because there are two buses a day - the last being at 6pm.!0 -

TOTALLY agree with this, as when we looking/dreaming Ok apart from the prices:eek::D we really did need to find something close to where we allready live because of the boys, 16 & 17 , its not fair IMHO to up root kids when they reach a certain age, as they are going through a tramatic time anyway, being a teenager is not easy:eek::rotfl: especially as the world is allways against them:DWork to live= not live to work0
