Real homes have mixtures of contents taken from different periods. They don't freeze in time.
I think some of those visiting expected a country house and garden.
The thing is that even the berm (area inside the walls) is shared with the tenant farmers even today. If you look at the view from the old medieval road, the house to the left is occupied by the tenants and their kids and the smaller crenalleated bit to the right is the original 13C hall.
The 17/18C habit of shifting tenants out of sight never got actioned here.
The garden is the bit between the moat and the house walls. The only vehicular access is the track between two lots of cattle sheds and then some smarter farm buildings.
Until very recently, I suspect the family were restricted to the 13C wing because the only other useable rooms were the other side of the derelict hall.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

When I was at school (somewhere between the neolithic & paleolithic) we used to go to Ightham Mote which had family associations with my school.
It was still in private hands then. Although a little shabby it had a wonderful aura about the place which was gone last time I visited a few years ago.
Markenfield seems a very similar sort of place so I'm doubly pleased to see it's still privately owned & being cared for as someone's home. Take that away & it becomes just an interesting building, IMO.0 -
One of our Vorwerks died this morning.
I knew she wasn't right when I let them out at 6.30 and she remained on the perch. That's not Vorwerk behaviour!
We did what we could; gave her Tylan water and olive oil, but she conked out at 11 am. The others are fine, but then, so was she last night. Odd, but there it is.
This must be the first decent day since.....can't remember:o..
.....probably the last time I cut the grass. I'm back doing that again, just in case there isn't another chance.0 -

It's only a small amount compared with the cost of drawing up the plans & doing the work. If decisions could be quicker it would save money.
My BiL has been messed-about repeatedly by them. He's kept his cards close to his chest and plenty of notes, because it'll all go to the Ombudsman in due course, once the build is signed off. Regardless of the outcome, that will cost the taxpayer!
Haven't heard anything about our application. I'm not very hopeful, but I'm seriously thinking of doing a Plan B anyway. Been casting my eye over what we could get for the same money instead of doing the full build, and it's quite interesting!0 -
Sorry to hear about the hen, Dave.
CTC - Maybe......
but you've now joined the ranks of the landed gentrywho obviously must be able to afford these things.
Well, according to the usual view of most of Joe Public, apparently. Unless, of course, they find themselves in a similar position.0 -

I am trying to picture the dimensions of that. My guess is it might depend on quality of picture..because someone with the right space for something that size might be uber fussy? No idea, just a stab in the dark0 -
