I've tried a few things like that and they seem variable, some like the spot they are given and some don't. Also, some get raided by the birds before you can get to them and some don't, again I think this can be down to where you plant it as well.
The main problem with this sort of thing, is that it's difficult to keep the birds off with netting. They require some sort of structure or something to tie the canes to.
I want to make a fruit cage on the banks of my muck heap. Figuring out how to do that with fifty p and a bit of rotten wood is the problem!0 -
Some people grow a red currant bush as a sacrifical fruit - that feeds the birds & they are supposed to leave the other berries alone......0

aaahhhh! now i may ,may be able to help....:D i have a tubular frame from a big pagodery/tent thing. one of those big party tents where you have a plastic cover over. if i remember rightly it was approx 20'x10' x6'h. it has a pitch roof BUT you could just use poles to make cross bars instead ??? then just get roll of netting and attatch ??? advantage being you can sink poles in the ground however uneven !:D just an idea/offer .....and a freebie [maybe 50p]

Of course, your garden will become known as the feeding ground for the whole local population of blackbirds and when they have young, it's amazing just how much they can damage at one time.
My MIL had about 20 redcurrant bushes and never got to eat one (not that she tried that hard tbh... but anyway) her other soft fruit was also decimated, maybe the redcurrant bushes bought in more birds?
Cats can help alot at this time of year, but not entirely. Maybe if you have about 20 cats, it may help alot
Can you tell, I've had years of sorting out the best way to keep birds offFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Hope boiler man gives boiler all clear, the only good thing about not having a boiler is not dreading the sevicing, much like old cars and mots!
Re stuff, i think the chances of me sorting out my stuff for ebay is slim, so before chucking anything of worth i will say here, you and stitching witch at least are close enough to possibly use it. I wonder where splodger seedswapper went? They were relatively local too.
We are having road works today and i went out to try and get them to roll the chippings on our drive but they said they are already spoken for:(. Nevermind, would have looked nice and smart thoguh. They also made a mockery of my new deterrant fence, by rolling up and helping themselves to my driveway as somewhere to park and set up camp.0 -
LIR....make them a cuppa and mention in lieu of thier parking a "bit of chippings" spilt on your drive is acceptable....;) [or maybe the other recipient can have the parking ??]
