OH and a friend we've had staying this weekend are de-rusting, washing, and Hammerite-ing the ballast from the boat. We're going to put it in the cold frames overnight so it doesn't get wet before it's cured. Been very windy today which hasn't helped my poor beans that I was trying to begin hardening off! Some have lost the odd leaf, but if I don't get them out soon I'll be in trouble when we go off to Chelsea.

I've potted on 5 patty pan squashes, have some more of a different kind for tomorrow plus courgettes. Might leave the courgettes a couple more days as another sprung up today. :) Finally started the last few morning glory seeds, they are Black Beauty, not Black Knight as I thought before. But still deep purple as opposed the regular blue.

Beans are now safely back in kitchen overnight, and I hope it's less windy tomorrow. Greying up now, and we're forecast overnight rain. Waiting on the Country File week ahead forecast so we can plan when to use the slug-o-killer (Nemaslug) as while it's good for the soil to be wet it isn't good for it to be drenched immediately after application. Am knackered now, feel like going straight to bed! :( Oh well, have borrowed cat to keep me warm! ;) (We're cat sitting for DD1 while they are at caravan this weekend, prob get to keep cat another night but he'll go home then and I won't half miss him)

Azalea is in its prime, really gorgeous!

I sit at the kitchen bifold and plot what needs doing, and look at all of the plants busy growing. Garlic is late, this time last year we were already harvesting scapes to stir fry and make garlic pesto with. No sign of scapes yet this year. Can't wait, yummy treat!

to you bee keepers / knowledgable lot..is it normal that a lot [well drop in ocean] of MY bees are on the gravel, dozy then dying..:(
i read up on possibilities and it said to put saucers of sugar slightly wet down for them as lack of food can make em demise..
i was on all fours with a syringe aswell, dropping drops infront of the bees [things i do !] and they were "drinking" it...may be just fluke tho...
SO...is this normal and im neurotic or do i need to do something.
we are talking a few compared to the 1000s wizzing about..:D

I think worker bees have a working life of about 3 weeks before they quit the hive to snuff it, alfie.
If it's only a few then it may just be natural wastage. If the numbers increase dramatically then there may be some other problem.
    No sign of mites?

    Been off line a lot.

Hope son is going on okay Lucielle.

Good luck with the move rozzee.

LIR - did you not clip their wings?

Maggie - lovely Azelia - I have one the same but not nearly as big as yours nor flowering yet.

It's blowing an absolute gale & incredible amount of rain has come down - It's truly disgusting - like November, poor lambs.

Got new hens yesterday, poor loves wonder where they've come to. Don't ever remember having such quiet travellers. but don't think they've been outside until their long journey from Skye. They're making up for it now as they're little tinkers trying to get in the house at night. Two big boys (Orps) are hanging around outside their run making lusty noises!

Went over to a hotel/restuarant that's got new owners to use their Wi-Fi. Nice folks & seem to have reinvigorated the place - great stuff - had our lunch & spent a couple of hours behind their double glazing looking out at the boiling grey sea.

Hidious weather & still not got seedlings out.........
  • Question: (out of sheer curiosity)...if one wanted to keep ducks, could they be 'put away for the night' in the same fashion as chickens, to keep them from fox raids?

That's what I had to do when I kept them as I'd clipped their wings so I had to get them in at night, but they were a pain & very naughty - they got snaffled by a pine marten eventually.
