It looks we're in for the rough weather on Sunday, CTC
LIR - If you have a good carpenter among your workmen ask him. We had a 4-poster for one of the cottages made that way.0 -
I fancy a box bed.http://www.oldandinteresting.com/box-beds.aspx
Heard the first Cuckoo today. Just the one.
Freezing here, but I got a bed of onions & carrots in - allus plant alternate rows, usually still get fly, but allus still do it like that.
Also ripped out some saplings self seeded & shifted them up to the road (outwith my deer fence) trying to save their little lives as I like trees & don't like killing 'em. But they'll probably get eaten up. Do this malarky most Springs & I have some sad half eaten trees up there & loads of deid uns.
It's so cold & yuck, but it's been like that for sooooooooooo long.#0 -
I DO NOT ENVY YOU CHOILLE....... it may be raining here [although its a bit mental, lashing down one minute, sunshine the next !!] but its not been what i class as cold...
i have driven through blankets of rain only to cross a cattlegrid and be met by dry roads and sunshine...crazy ??
the wind coming across from the needles [IOW], across field next to me seems to blow rain away mostly. but have had downpours ,so not totally escaped it but its much worse 1 mile in from coast line here.
im going to fetch a fab old kitchen cupboard tomorow . 3 drawers down one side [top =cutlery..bottom tin lined cool drawer] and a door on t'other. got old enamel top to it . intend to put it in my potentially re designed kitchen. ive got all the "bits" just need to sort the floor ??0 -
We've been the same ish but sort of gets better later in the day...about 5pm, but really seem to feel cold. The poor lambs that are just coming here are having a hard time of it.0

Itsme and Davesnave... I am sure they have given you real bad weather for tomorrow, with thunder etc:eek: I hate thunder and lightening:eek:
Not a great deal going on here. Going back to the drawing board about the refurb and thinking we won't raise the roof after all.
Enquiries with HMRC about whether we can get the reduced VAT rating, which will dictate when we start the build; applying to have the house taken out of commission for council tax purposes. It's all about where money can be saved....
Have to get really focused on sorting out the boundary fence and the static as we have to be on the move again in May. We will then be living in the static for real, not just visiting it...
Hopefully once we have a fence and have moved up the hill for good, I'll be reinvestigating buying some birds again. The plus side of a decision (if that's how it goes) to live in the static til next year will mean we can really concentrate on the land.
OH is excited about buying his first chainsaw :eek:0 -

Pete, who virtually sleeps with a chain saw in his hand, showed me where his saw hit him when he was up a tree recently. It didn't get him, as he had the correct trousers on, but it made a bit of a mess of those.
And with chain saws, don't economise or go second hand. You may not want a professional one costing £500+ but it's not worth going much under £300. A mid price Stihl or Husquvarna would be a solid bet, or an Echo. Look at who services what, locally. You can't buy the better makes on-line, as they like to ensure personal contact with the dealer.0 -
Make sure he gets the trousers and boots to go with it.

OH is fairly sensible about his power tools as he's done a 2 year furniture making course which had a health and safety aspect, but he'd quite like to do some arborist training too. We have got probably hundreds of trees, many of which have seen better days and could do with some TLC, but are very tall....
Where would you recommend buying the clothing from, Dave?0 -

I'd recommend getting the clothing from somewhere 'local,' though for you that might be Swansea!
I'm lucky having two shops that do internet within 30 - 35 miles, so I can look on there before visiting. I'd only buy boots etc where I could try them on, as sizes are a bit of a lottery. I knew the blooming trousers were bound to be too long, but again, waists are a matter of preference, especially if you put weight on over winter when you use the saw the most.
Here are my 'local' shops:

The Stihl 181 is just the sort of machine I meant. By the time he's worn that out, your OH will know if he wants something more powerful. Speaking personally, I know I won't want or need to cut down anything challenging.0 -
If you have a decent farm supplies place locally, rozee (the equivalent of Mole Valley Farmers) they sell the saws & clothing. One of the most important things to have is the helmet/visor or a really good pair of goggles. Husqvarna sell their own helmets, visor, trousers & boots. I guess Stihl may do the same.0
