One of my dreams in life would be to open a museum of saddlery and equipemnt, but money would never, ever allow it. For myself i would really like a bucket seat side saddle to try, you can get new ones made in s. america on ebay. I used to ride side saddle, but have to say it was never, ever my forte!
I am fasinatedby tack, both the craftsmanship, history and culture in it, and also where it handicaps the horse and sometimes the rider...whether thats poor modern design or the old side saddles where the women essentially sat totally sideways and were lead!
Thats one of my problems, interested in to many things, and the majority of them are expensive:o
there was a posh shop in marrakesh that had the most amazing saddles...:j you would have died and gone to heaven in there ...as for £££s ...dont ask..:eek:0 -

.....Years ago I found a very old bronze & iron stirrup that is incredibly ornate. Sea creature on the actual wheel & hands made of bronze clutching the bit that would have been made of leather. I still have it hung in the caravan from a hook. Someone thought it was Spanish, a guy who owns an armoury that rents stuff out to films.0 -
Spanish and portuguese stirups can be very ornate, http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=portuguese+stirrup&hl=en&client=safari&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=DwGGT_rCKYiv8QPQ_5y_Bw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CFYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1024&bih=672.
Love 'em. Also love the very old Slipper stirrups

Amazing - esp the slipper ones.
I'll take a photo in the day light - after dusting it as it's a tad furry!0 -
Funny old day yesterday....
Asked the lady we get softwood logs from if they were still delivering, because we were running low, and by the afternoon her DIL was here with a trailer full. She hadn't been gone 10 minutes, when Pete arrived with a Toyota load of hardwood, so I have a lovely sorting job to do now!
While Pete was here,I showed him the new 'spring' of smelly water in the lower field. Knowing about stuff like this, he pronounced that it was definitely the run off from a septic tank and that I "ought to get it sorted with the owner before haymaking."
So, I employed the Diplomatic Serviceand asked DW to ring the owners of the septic tank to invite them round for a joint viewing/smelling session. They were more forthcoming this time, saying that the pipes were replaced within the last ten years, but still playing it vague about where they went. Apparently, the previous owners here were "going to get it all sorted legally in their deeds." Hmmmmm. The previous owners didn't get quite a few things sorted legally, but in this case I'm very grateful to them!
As itsme said earlier, discharge within 10m of a water source is a no-no now, and only people like Mr Dog who have contractors in the family can get away with it. Any other contractor is going to stick to the regs.
Meanwhile, still on a watery theme, I've just sent a letter to the council, asking them to back my campaign for a proper drain in the road outside here. This is something which the county now agrees is essential on safety grounds, due to standing water I last measured at 17m x 2m, and up to 7cm deep, but it needs funding.....and funding is largely governed by how many people make a noise, or more importantly, who they are!0 -
lol you two you are like 2 naughty school boys:D
LIR sounds very interesting, pitty you couldnt do some sort of museum..as i should imagine you would get lots of visitors.
Rhiwie... I know you have said before, but i was wondering what did you used to do in London? with the way the price of living is going up etc... are you still glad you took the leap? what do you think the future pitfalls will be ?
Worried now as i cant find my camera......
youngest and his mates went to the house yesturday, and he was finding it hard to open the front door, anyway a woman was passing, and thought he was trying to break in, and was shouting at him, saying she was going to phone the police....He did manage to tell he that it was his house, showed her the key etc.. and then went on to have a conversation on what we would be doing with the land......
He was a bit piddled off, but as i told him that was really good of her, as he could have been anyone trying to break in..
our off roader friend couldnt make it last night, so we just pottered around the garden, It looks as though we have done s@d all:eek::rotfl: I think the time it is going to take to do it all i will be
good job there was one left in the house......lol.... maybe it is a sign,
I must admit even though you cant really see any big differences in what we have been doing, the hour or so we are there most nights are breaking us in into it, I might even lose some weight without going on a diet:T:DWork to live= not live to work0
