CTC, somehow translated marn as Mam, thought you meant DW for a minute
Let the lads loose with an orbital sander drill attachment, if there's owt left after that, oil it and ebay
Old apple trees? Dave or RAS will be able to give you pruning advice.
As you have a fair bit of woodland, apart from the obvious use for fuel, just wondering whether you could use some logs for growing fungi? And with the soil being dampish in parts, willow for weaving?0 -
Oh...
I was going to suggest that if you could board out a small space, even old shuttering, maybe you could have somewhere to dry clothes, hang out stuff to photo, put a trestle table so you could sort things out?
Oh well.
Hope the roof os weather proof soon choille.
That's what I've been doing! Funny that. Got plastic over stuff on a trestle.
The rain has been unbelievable even for here - torrential.
The winda man came at 8.50pm - poor guy, He'd been over to Skye & here there & everywhere first - we were last. First windas on the lorry. Goodness knows what time he'd get home. He wouldn't take owt to eat but got a coffee down him.
Next job is defo roofing, but a few debts to pay first - Goodness knows when that'll be.
But that's a few more windas here - must getthe paint on 'em.
Poorly hen - big tumour like lump appeared on her leg. This hen had scaley leg mite & seemed to get a wound which I kept putting Savlon on, but it's like brown & hard. First I thought it was an abcess & gave her a jag of Penicillin & another jag 48 hours later - today, but I don't know..........She's not hardly putting any weight on it - Don't know what else to do.
Still feel tired. It's gone pretty cold again here - tide was really low earlier on - meant to walk down, but couldn't muster up the energy......lazy cow.:o0 -
Seen one of the previous owners earlier, so he could show us where the stopcock was... looks as though there might be problems with the water supply in very cold weather....( another expensive job to add to the list)..
We also found out the land has never actually been measured etc, and it was on what the mother thoought how much land there was.... going by the size of the garden ( 3rd of an acre) we worked it out there must be at least 3 plus acres..
So was wondering.... has anyone, or do you know who could measure our land? does it cost alot? or could they work it out from the land registry maps etc?
You need an experienced LOCAL land surveyor with preferably a satelite GPS surveying-thingy gizmo.0 -
Yes, CTC, choille is right. You need to know exactly what you have &, maybe even more importantly, if it is registered to you on LR.0

Thanks for the heads up with google earth:T will get the kids to have a look for me, as i am hopeless at things like that..
This is what I use:
http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-area-calculator-tool.htm
It comes in pretty handy as long as you know where on a map to find the land you want to measure! There's a set of details I've requested from the agent because it says on the net there's an acre of land with it, but the immediate curtilage is only 0.15 acres and the field next to/behind the house is more than 3 acres according to the map tool! Hmmm... It seems reasonably accurate.
Welcome to abitofhelp! I'm sure you'll fit in fine. As has been said, we're not mainstream people here but all like-minded and DEFINITELY sane (you too Alfie!) - it seems all the rest are the mad ones to me..."...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -
Hi abitofhelp:beer:..yep we are a great friendly family here...it doesnt matter if your dream is to have a house with a nice garden, or an allottment, smallholding or a HUGE farm.... etc.. or even try and raise/make some money to keep what you've got ( lol thats me now)
We will all try and help give advice, we are all here to help each other.....even if its just a listening ear to moan and groan too.
Itsme.... it wasnt registered before, but our solicitor is doing all that for us,
Last night we found out some interesting little bits about the place..
firstly some sort of family member has lived in the house for over 100 years......it used to be the weighbridge house there used to be a weighbridge opp/near the house, that used to weigh the drams of coal that were heading down to the village/canal..( the tramway is now the public footpath)
In its day the place used to be a chicken farm, and it looks like in the 60's/70's ( must have been when he sold 10 acres) he turned into battery chickens, and had over 15 thousand chickens, then in the 80's went bankrupt due to Edwina Curry's outburst on salmonella sp?
Rhiwie, Dai took a peak in the attic:eek: but after the guy said he had been up there, and there was nothing there, so i am ok, no dead bodies:rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -

How come you all pile up the rubbish together in one heap?
It's heavy duty ex-building site fine mesh, so the net works, given the human will to use it. Err... an old sheet is just the sort of look I'm trying to avoid!:rotfl:
The barn conversions share a lane with us. There's about 13 of them + a farmhouse + a neighbour + us, all needing to assemble rubbish at the top of the lane ready for collection on the appropriate day. (Council won't go down the lane. Point blank refusal.)
Some people don't wrap their rubbish properly, and others like to get it off their premises and outside ours at the earliest opportunity, all of which leads to problems, though not for them, because they're 80-100m away!
When the crows strike it's not funny, especially when the wind is blowing, although it can be quite entertaining when "interesting" pieces of rubbish are found in this way. I won't go into detail, but picking up garbage has led to some surprising revelations about folk who live down the lane!;)
Anyway, the net is my last attempt to put us a little further from the lives of some neighbours and stop the place being turned into a dump. If it doesn't work, I have a Plan B, which involves my mate with a digger and a new entrance.....:cool:0 -
well hello everyone, popped outside this morning to peruse the estate which didnt take long believe me, checked the raspberry canes, now please dont laugh you lot with your acres, i have 8 autumn fruiting canes, should have been at least 12 but dipstick oh pulled some out last year thinking they were weeds, could have cheerfully throttled him with them, he is not allowed in the garden now unsupervised. also plum tree has all of 5 blossoms which wont make much jam i shall have to raid the damson trees in the field behind me when the time comes. i have been collecting dandelion flowers this morning with a view to make some wine, they are now residing in the freezer until i have enough, if i could be self sufficient in wine i think that would be saving enough, although a still to produce gin would be glorious.Grocery Challenge 24th Feb-28 Dec 2012 £2000/£1404

The wildlife getting at rubbish has always been a problem around here, too.
Rooks, ravens, foxes, magpies ...... all at it given half a chance.
I'm surprised the council won't come down your lane, though. Is that because they use a proper dust-cart round your way? We have a little pick-up with a caged back which comes round - big ones would never get around here.
In theory we are meant to take wheelie bins outside the gate, take the bags out of the bins & leave them next to the bin to be collected. Of course, this is meant to be done just prior to collection (or householders are liable to prosecution) but that's almost impossible when you don't know what time the binmen will arrive.
I phoned the council about the problems with trashed rubbish & we now put ours out in old-fashioned dustbins again.
All those darned wheelie bins, coloured boxes & bags & it's still the good old metal bin that does the best job. :rotfl:0 -

No, it's a one-man operated truck, but a 'proper' one, with a squasher. You can get HGVs down the lane, no probs, but they just won't do it.
People here are spoilt. It's only a few birds. The foxes and badgers don't cause any problem in that way at all, but clearly they may start, if given encouragement, which is one reason why I don't want rubbish bags outside our entrance for longer than 12 hours or so.
Although we're not currently running as a business, we'll probably do so again in future. Having 12-25 bin bags right at your entrance isn't a great way to drum up trade!
But, we have two other entrances... Out of respect to the people down the lane, we kept our business at the top for two years. Where we open up again is another matter!0
