Rhubarb patch is going mental atm, arched over towards chooks and they may have got a bit of leaf. So put a temp barrier up until chooks go onto summer paths. Will start cropping this weekend.

Greengage and pear blossom out, apple blossom nearly there but not quite. Think it was RAS who suggested not cutting down Autumn raspberries to get an earlier crop and I'm trying that this year as the summer raspberries are diseased and will be dug up.

Lots of weeding to do, inc asparagus bed, vital as theyll be coming up soon!

Now of all the car booty things to sell, what went best last Sunday? I always expect an uphill battle with antiques and vintage items (its not baby clothes, after all!!) but I sold a load of antiquarian books (poetry, history, welsh language, Kipling). Felt quite chuffed and pleased with the world!

My report for the day, which turned out very sunny, is as follows:
Corrected bad paint job in shower room, skimped last week and snagged by DW. :o

Nattered to friend, who often has info we miss, not being in the village. ;)

Installed a new net to cover rubbish bags of 16 households to protect same from crows & jackdaws before dustcart arrives. (6am tomorrow) No, I'm not a community-minded saint; just peed off with rubbish strewn all over the road outside.:(

Made new concrete step because future SIL is visiting later this week. He fell & twisted his ankle last time he left here, suffering considerable pain & inconvenience for a couple of weeks. I suppose most of the other houses he visits don't have a huge drop outside their front doors, but we'd kinda got used to it.... :o.....and in just over a year from now, God willing, that won't be our front door.....

Ah, just looked outside to see that someone has thrown the rubbish net over our wall. ....They don't like it?.... Maybe they are just thick? Who knows? Anyway they can't do much because it's fixed to the wall with bl**dy great screw eyes! :rotfl:

Having retrieved an area from total infestation with JK please let it grow to its full height this summer - read this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3159838 which has a link.

We found it much easier and massively more effective to clear JK when we could inject large stems than dealing with smaller growth.

What you might want to do is remove any old dry stems now and burn them. Then let the stuf grow until August.

I have a neighbour who insists on pulling it up each year. So there is no grow to treat properly and it resprouts every year. Yet the area of major infestation is clear.

    I agree.
We've never had to tackle JK but, as with all the really strong nasties, the way to get rid of them is to get them to do half the work for you.
So, you need them to be dying back & taking their goodness back into their roots when you go on the attack.

If the net doesn't work ........ birds can peck through, use an old sheet, Dave.
How come you all pile up the rubbish together in one heap?

thanks for the welcome everyone, its really made my day. i would like to report that the cherry and plum trees we put in last year have blossom and it looks like more to come really pleased with that, white current bush is well behind the red and black which are smothered with leaves is that normal?there are only a couple of buds on the white current. my rhubarb should be ready in a couple of weeks. waiting for broad beans to poke through the ground, bit worried about asparagus patch no sign of any yet, put the crowns in 3 years ago so should be able to crop this year, except i bought cheap crowns and i really shoud have spent more. i grew some from seed last year, pots of the things everwhere, they all germinated had trouble giving the things away. the ones a i kept (only wanted 6 or 8) i put in a new raised bed oh built for me in the front garden. they are romping away. i might see how the next few weeks go and order new crowns for the autumn, has anyone had success planting crowns in the autumn? your stories i have read so far have been so inspirational well done. i will have chickens next year.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Spent some of today looking for the small sub, ersible pump we bought last year and just cannot find. :(. Need to get it on the muck heap now, and drain the accrued rain water on to the veg garden. I just don't know where it can have gone.

When we find it we then have the problem of creating a filter for the pump.
Ast years attempts were not ideal.....a blue barrel with holes in, wrapped in netting, and then a thin permeable sheet around that, then in side that the pump submerged in a hanging basket with a pair of tights around it. It needed clearing three to four times a day.

Anyone have any ideas of where to start looking fof good prices on seep hose? We want it for that pump, when we find it, and also, to fit on to the sewage treatment unit for summer, so that we can directly watsr the garden.

How deep is the water....?? when i had to empty the pond i sat the pump in a shallow bucket and let the high water go over the top but not the bottom pond sludge. took water only.
i then lowered the height of buckets till i reached sludge level....not sure if this would work for you.
OR you just need a dirty water pump that merely does a bypass with all sludge/water? sorry i know what i mean [i think i have a mini generator run one somewhere...surprise surprise !] but hard to describe...:D

Its sloping, from nothing to about two and a half sludgy feet...sludgedy all the way through! Its about.....hmmm. Almost twenty feet wide, and water part about that long. Its a pain its sunken, otherwise i could syphen it to the veg garden...just nearby, but higher! But...who would want to suck that hose
