Well, it was slightly weird but it got a whole lot weirder after I left.
(Yes, surprising it wasn't the other way round, I know :p)
It definitely had an aura about the place........ & not just from the sheepskin factory :rotfl:

Some of it is lovely. Some of the shops, characters and groups that have gathered around the town, and places like the goddess temple where i have spent some very valuable time, but others are seedy and unhealthy, and introspective, and destructive, which i do not like.

LIR, either I've suddenly got double vision or you've posted twice.
I think you may have had a bit of Glastonbury wacky backy.
Alfie, what have you lot been up to? ;) :rotfl:

OK ....... maybe it was me?

The last time I was anywhere near Glastonbury was to try and get an old client of mine discharged from detention under the Mental Health Act. He'd definately had too much wacky backy - and a lot more - and I wasn't successful in my beautifully prepared challenge :D

There was definitely a lot of it (& every other weird & wonderful substance) around. Walking up the High Street brought a whole new meaning to "pollution". :rotfl:
I used to enjoy sitting in the Abbey ruins on sunny days. It never ceased to amaze me how there could be a really busy road just over the wall & yet one could hear so little traffic noise.

We went to visit a couple of nurseries yesterday: one which just deals in trees & shrubs and another more general one which had been recommended locally.

The tree place was....er, interesting. Set on a farm in the middle of nowhere, the owner seemed to be propagating thousands of trees, but it wasn't his main line of work and most of them weren't of great size. This didn't bother us, as we're happy to grow things on, but most people want instant results. Anyway, we couldn't help noticing we were the only customers, despite being there for over 2 hours, as the owner could talk for England!

We nearly gave up on the other nursery, as were late and hadn't eaten, but having gone half way, we decided to continue. I'm glad we did, because that was the better experience, with a real Alladdin's cave of plants, all at sensible prices. For example, good sized shrubs at £4 - £5 and tree whips at £2. In many ways, the place was the sort of nursery we'd create, if we were the owner's age, so it's a good thing we're retired! We wouldn't be in direct competition, but with a good number of customers present, and buying, it was clear the chap's formula was spot-on.

On our return, I looked at the weather forecast and decided to have another big burn up to clear all the remaining winter clean-up branches and the weeds etc from the recent groundworks. It was a bit late to celebrate for you CTC, but better late than never, and it was a good one! :)

We're off to a nursery today. OUr first really, so it should be interesting. It's a local one so we're praying for an interesting place.

the local open garden i have been raving about from last year ips not opening this year.....i think its to do with the olympics, a few do not seem to be oppening. What a shame, by thie time next year comes i will be chomping at the bit to get round them. I was over ambitious with personal timiong for getting decent gardens when we moved, i had not appreciated i would not be able to start them because of the builders, and now i want at least one area established and pretty.

We can't plant up much of our newly-created garden, due to the fact that there are still nasties in the soil, mainly couch grass and dock. The docks & nettles are OK but couch is difficult and best eradicated before sensitive things are planted. Based on previous experience out front, that will take a year, at least.

In the meantime, we shall just plant trees and a few tough or expendable shrubs, like buddleia, which I can make more of any time.

We have seen a few local gardens where people have probably been tempted by the sight of clean earth, planting up when the couch (or stroil as they call it here) is still down there. They never get on top of it. Similarly, you can't seed a lawn or lay new turf on top of the stuff.

    Cows love it though!:rotfl:

I'm really reining myself in and all we'll be buying at the garden centre is grass seeds to grass the banks of the hardstanding where the static caravan has been sited and the shale covered in soil to protect the children. (This is OH and quarryman's idea so I hope it works)

I've decided that all we can do this year is get the greenhouse and cold frame functional, clear totally overgrown paths, remove glass and barbed wire, prune eye poking branches and move some saplings from where they will otherwise be culled by my over zealous OH. I'm thinking if I pot them up they may be able to be used to fill gaps in hedges or sold at the garden gate next year. We'll also be watching the garden carefully and taking photos of what we have month on month.
