Is that spraying like I do it, or like farmers do it?
Personally, I don't believe you can get on top of weeds in a season. I will be out doing ours in a few weeks, but they are markedly fewer than in the past. Maybe if I do this for about 5 years they will reach levels where I can deal with them manually.
The fields will be a mass of dandelions in a week or so. I leave them for the bees.0 -
The new kitten has found my one safe windowsill, sat on the tomatoes (broken, damaged) and eaten the chillies
So now I face putting everything (left) in the greenhouse and bringing it in every night!

Ii have heard 2 stories about the selling of the cottages. one, that it was being left to 2 brothers? one wanted to buy the other one out, but could not raise the money, hence it went to auction,
But from a friend of ours, who owns a livery staple just opp our land ( on thye entrance in) they had tried selling the house for £140k plus, which i am sure i would have noticed on my travels around rightmove and EA websites...
I know i should have done this well before now:cool: but i need to knuckle down and work out our household budgets etc... been putting it off, and off...
All i can say is, good job our chickens are in full lay ( at the moment, might change because of this cold snap) and hubby and i dont mind eating eggs with everything ( at the moment...lol....)
I am also going to sit down and trowl the internet for local businesses that might have waste fruit, veg, bread ( that has not been in a kitchen, so shops, manufacturers, wholesalers etc) and write/contact them regarding collecting their waste on a regular basis... I know alot of them have this all sorted, BUT, it is well worth me trying..especially to try and keep the cost of feeding the pigs down ( when we eventually have them) I might even offer them a small amount per kg ( which would be alot less than the pig nuts per kg).
I am also going to look out potential places i could get acorns in the autumn, as by all accounts pigs love these, and do really well on them...maybe a request on freecycle might help
Be careful where you source the veg from, CTC.......
"It is permissible to source certain types of former foodstuffs (see above), as well as fruit and vegetables, from non-catering premises for feeding to pigs, but this must only be done from those premises that either do not handle materials banned from being fed to pigs, or that have (HACCP) procedures in place to ensure complete separation from prohibited materials, and these procedures have been agreed with the local authority."

It's trying to be sunny here, while I try and catch up with the thread and procrastinate on my admin and accounts.
Thanks for the comments about windows, guys. It's making me rethink uPVC. We're on a very blustery hill... We need to go and look at the manufacturers and see what their product is like. The more expensive wood windows are apparently super built to last. A real quality product each made out of a hunk of wood, rather than pieces made up into frames...! Super insulated etc etc...
However, we also have wood at the houses in Sheffield and agreed that it is such a drag to paint, even every four years.... So we need a think. I think the staircase glass tower will have to be aluminium, (if it's not wood) which looks nice, but as other people have said, maybe doesn't age so well. Perhaps modern manufacturing processes have improved...?
It's all about research. I'm beginning to think that if we go for what we want, we'll be in the caravan longer than we initially anticipated and I'm now thinking along the lines of "well, if we're not moved in by Winter, maybe we'll have one liveable room in the house where we can take the kids in to play when the weather is really grim...". I'm starting to be glad that the caravan is double glazed.
The new quantity surveyor will have the figures by early next week, so long as he's not called infor major surgery too! We're applying for a polytunnel, a stable block and a double garage and workshop as part of the planning application but these will be in phase two - or three- of any build.
Have you got your keys CTC?0 -
Itsmehonest, yes i know it has been banned for a while now, not even allowed to feed veg peelings that has been in your kitchen to chickens either..
I was going to contact wholesalers, bookers, shops etc...
Anyway... on the house front....
