CTC - Good luck, sometimes I think the lawyers just string things out so they get more dosh off you.

Rozee - High rated brown UPVC windows are now more expensive than hard wood. I've seen some horrible problems with aluminium framed windows. Blistering etc.

If we had loads of money we'd be in our house now, but we are doing it the way we are as we are working to a limited budget & don't want to be in debt as we aint young 'uns. Fours years in a caravan is no joke especially the other two Winter's but it's the only way we can do it. We have to earn the money before buying materials - it's been like climbing a mountain with weights on at times.

The only alternative is PVC/aluminium option and I don't really want to go that way.

I'm going to be devil's advocate and say that I'd go for the UPVC option, and in fact we shall do so here. :D

It's different with a property like lir's, where she has no option, but to my mind, wooden windows, nice as they are on some period houses, are just drudgery for those who don't enjoy rubbing down paint & varnish, re-coating and then finding all the extra facets that we missed first time around! We had wooden sashes on our first period house in Bath and I was overjoyed to leave them behind. :)

I agree with choille that ally isn't a great option where there is sea spray around, and I'd guess she is going for the weathered boarding look, in which case the windows have to fit in with that....

But hey, don't let me put you off or anything!!! ;)

As you say, Dave, wooden windows & doors (particularly in areas exposed to extremes of weather) are a perpetual nightmare. They can need treating every year.
There are now many makes of wood effect UPVC (some lousy but increasingly more that are very good) &, for those that are allowed to use them, I'd say that they "pay" for themselves very quickly in comparison to their wooden equivalents.

We have 52 separate windows & 14 external doors including patio, part-glazed & solid. A few at the back of the house are of the modern variety &, believe me, I wish they all were.

Oh & it's grey, damp & 'taters' here so I'm glad I'm not further north ........ brrrrrrr

    So many windows its me!

We got a quote for painting ours shortly after moving...not renovating, just painting to get them through a couple of winters £7500. We bought a cheap scaffold tower and painted them ourselves. :).

We have two doors, front and back, and a set of horrid french windows. The an is to put another door in and two more sets of frnech windows, then later, with the extention, another set of french windows.

Goodness, temperature has dropped here, all of a sudden, gone heavy grey. A couple of thousand years ago this weather would see people round here heading to stonehenge with something scarificial i think!

White when I got up, although the ground was covered by 2cms of wet slush. With the sleet and snow coming is horizontal from the East, the bus-stop was plastered, inside, so we sheltered outside in the lee.

Obviously much more snow higher up and a lot of disruption with folk not making it into work.

It may freeze tonight but hope it will thaw quickly in the sun in the morning.
