    @Dave & LIR
    The best ride-on we had was an Alko 18hp Briggs & Stratton 45" cut which was brilliant at tackling all manner of grass, weeds ......... & hills. It could happily pull up the inclines. Sadly, the original company closed. I believe Al-Ko still exists but is now a German company. I don't know what their mini-tractors are like now, though

    We currently have a Husqvarna (can't remember the model, sorry) which is pretty good but not, IMO, like the old workhorse. I particularly dislike the way the safety cut-outs work when mowing on uneven or bumpy ground. If the mower bounces it momentairly disconnects the safety switch & makes the tractor misfire :(
    When DH is out mowing it can sometimes sound like an old banger. :rotfl:

    My only advice would be to choose something fairly versatile - collect/not collect, mulching, able to be used with various attachments like rollers & trailers etc. Get the right basic tractor & it will save you money in the long run.

    Oh, forgot - have the right tyres, too, depending on how rough & 'off-road' you're going.

    I'll get OH to pass on some info when he comes in later, He's off sorting out a golf club at the mo.

    Had our first ride on sale today, so a very happy L here. Hound has got some painkillers and will live.

    Thank you itsme for the info. The immobile ride-on is an ancient 12.5hp Husky, but we haven't any serious inclines that will need mowing, if it ever goes again.

    Went to MVF today as it was one of their special wood & fencing days with useful discounts. Bought enough stuff to keep us going for some time, though it still won't finish all the fences we still need to do. :(

    We also wrote to the wavering couple supposedly purchasing part of our old garden, saying that if they don't make contact by Monday, they'll be considered to have withdrawn. It's over a week since we answered their last email, and with no response, it's obviously time to put them on the spot. :p

    After writing that, I grumpily moved 2 tonnes of stones which would be in the way of the dumper on Monday. Made an impromptu dry stone wall with them and will tell DD2 it's an 'installation' when she arrives home from art college tomorrow. :D She is currently making naturally-derived coloured coats for trees, which she installs on favoured specimens in local parks... :rotfl:

    Glad Hound is on the mend and that the sale went well, lucielle.:)

    Ok, here is a question on lawn mowers! Are we mad to be hoping to my a used sit on? Is there a make that is more reliable than others? It will be for garden, but in the past i used to top areas of weeds in fields with a ride on too....and see that happening again.

    A hayter 13/30 is a good model. You need to think if you want a side discharge or normal or any attachments ie snow plough etc. Keep an eye on ebay, we sometimes pick up a few and turn them round.

    ....And I'd like to know what's best for rough areas of grass. We haven't a lot, but we're thinking of just opening up the orchard to sheep (with tree protection in place) to avoid the issue altogether, rather than splash out on something expensive and not much used.

    My 'free' ride-on remains immobile. I can't blame the person who donated it for losing interest, as fixing it might be impossible. He may have a look now the weather is warmer..... or I can always stick it on eBay. ;)

    Meanwhile, I have ordered new bolts for the 'self propelled' push mower.....:)
    A Honda rough cut mower um616 is a beast, according to OH. It has a 24" cut rotary blade, hydrostatic drive. When its set low it will also do a great job on the lawn. HTH

    Ok, having a had a good look around quackie o quackis is missing.....which is odd, i thought aristwadle would fight to the death for her.....both he and j egg k are incredibly shell shocked and subdued. A couple of chickens bodies left, ones that weren't good flyers. Shocked it managed to get through the door and horrifed quackie is missing. It has at least stopped the boys fighting. They have been separate through the night by some hurdles(actually cages not hurdle) in the barn, but in panic egg had joined aristwaddle on the couples side. The cages probable also did a decent job of containing for capture...
